I run the six puck Clutchnet sprung clutch with my T5, stock pressure plate, al flywheel.
We've ran the same clutch in a 450 whp AWD hill climb car in the past.

Focus on the cage and cleaning up the wiring and deleting all the bull**** unnecessary stuff. Start accumulating parts. Order John's suspension and you're off to an awesome start. You can get Porterfield pads for the stock brake system, but I still think they're fairly insufficient for a rally car. ...

Welcome! Great choice by the way. Merkur's are an absolute blast for a rally car! My roommate drives and open class AWD Impreza. A few weeks ago at a hill climb after our final run, he made the comment, "I think that was possibly the most fun I've had in a rally car." That was coming from ...

Max Attack Idaho Rally 2WD Championship Day 1 Coverage

Day one review video of the Max Attack championship is up. Amazingly it's hard to do same day coverage when you have no money and a volunteer team, but here's our best effort. 18 hours after the finish isn't too bad and we've had a blast. Huge thanks to Jens for getting us the media credentials and ...

I'm a big believer in not worrying about little things and just drive whatever you have as fast as you can. My lack of commitment through the tight twisty middle section, the first two corners, and the $#!%^& 3.64 final drive had more of an effect on my time than anything.

Just a small dent. Nothing major. The flimsyness of the sunroof patch probably helped absorb alot of the impact. BTW: Huge thanks to MC2Racing and Merkur Depot for their support. I've got bushings all around and the diff mount from MC2 and the car is amazingly solid and stable (that's almost 100 mph...

Also don't take any of the above the wrong way. I have no vested interest in which car you build or if you build an XR and I can guarantee you'll have fun in either. Whatever you do I'm sure at the end of the day we'll be swapping storys of near misses/big scares and drinking beer regardless!

You should also watch this video. I was six seconds off the record (set by a 400 hp Eclipse four years ago) and three seconds off the leader in a 450 hp Dodge Neon SRT4. I can absolutely guarantee that no Escort could be within 20 seconds of this and be able to take the abuse I was dealing out. Talk...

Buena Vista Hill Climb Report and In-car!

So in the aftermath of a thunderstorm, Mark and I departed Denver for the Buena Vista Hill Climb. This is one of the most favorite events as it's the most rally like road with tight and twisty sections and fast sections. Approximately 3 miles in length the road has wide and narrow sections, jumps, d...

The axle ratio of the GT is 4.11. The 1.8 makes about 5 less torque then a 2.0 VW and about 10 more HP. I like the escort. You guys are giving me good reason to try and prove you wrong. By the way, I am a welder/fabricator with cage experience. I have a bender in my shop and a nice tig welder. I ge...

One thing I'll always like about John. He has persistence in trying to help people make the right choice. It was his logical speak that made me decide to build a Merkur over a Subaru. Now I have a car that can win any 2WD event and am not involved in the money race that's occuring here in Colorado i...

If you get the Escort together you'll probably get to race against a Merkur someday. There's three of us currently active and a few more currently being built. I'd recommend finding the RS2000 prep manual. I think it's hosted on rallyanarchy somewhere. It's a good guide for what is the best FWD setu...

When I lobbed my T5 in I used the clutch and pressure place that came with the bellhousing. Clutch looked nearly new so I figured I'd give it a shot. Just took boost to make it slip pretty willingly. I now use a 6 puck sprung clutch from Clutchnet and it has never caused any issues and never slipped...
