Re: CV Joints
Hi all, Perhaps I miss the point here but the VW bus joints should be well built by original design specs since those vehicles were used commercially to haul heavy loads around and the joints were heavier designs than the other VW stuff. If the spec is followed (if) the axles should work fine with m...

Merry Christmas!
Hi all, It is the slower time of the year as we are working on other things or fighting cold weather to work on our cars but it is a great time of year all the same. I have had help from others in here and hopefully helped others as well and enjoy this forum every visit, even if I did wind up spendi...

Re: Black Sludge
Hi all, Was the motor sitting in an unheated area and not filled with coolant as I am guessing? Cooling and heating might have made it 'sweat' internally and cause some oxide creation (rust) that came loose when refilled with coolant. ?? Just a thought. I personally never had problems like that with...
Re: Yikes
Hi all, This is probably not what is happening with your injector but it is possible: My car sat for a long time before I started working on it to get it roadworthy again. When trying to start it the motor was only firing on one cylinder. I pulled the fuel rail off, pulled the injectors and physical...

Re: Getting ready for cold weather...
Hi all, I must admit to an error in my mention of the hose size on the XR as they are 1.25" on both sides of the radiator with both inlet and outlet the same size. I measured them with a micrometer and one was 1.26" and the other 1.271" so I am calling them 1 1/4" as that is the ...
Re: Wheels?
Hi all,
The best list I have seen on the cars for wheel size, tire size has been the one in the merkurencyclopedia:

Re: Wheels?
Hi all, I can only say that times are economically tough for some and some have small budgets to work with and yet still are in here asking for help. An ex Fiesta or Cougar wheel that looks good on the XR that cost small money to buy is still a good wheel and still functional. I don't think a 13&quo...
Re: Wheels?
Hi all, Ford Focus Gen 1 and 1.5 rims fit, last model Cougar, Ford Fiesta, Ford Contour, Mercury Mystique and others as well will fit. Try a u-pull junk yard for cheap wheels. I have been offered 15" Cougar rims as cheap as $25 each, for example. I am wanting 16" or 17" rims for my ne...
Re: Wheels?
Hi all, I have the 14" rims on mine and the car is already low to the ground with not much ground clearance. Are you trying for a 'look' like a low rider with 13" rims? The four bolt pattern for the XR is like many other four bolt Ford wheels and other sizes are easy to find, I would expec...
Re: Yikes
Hi all, The Autolite web sit has a page on how to read spark plugs that include pictures. I also found another site that shows close up photos of spark plugs and explanations of the plugs looking as they do: http://www.gtsparkplugs.com/reading-spark-plug-color.html I would recommend using the standa...

Hi all,
Silly money, actually. People drive cross country to get it for legacy equipment that is too expensive for them to choose replacement...
Try offering it on social media and don't take the first offer, sift through them for best deal for you.

Hi all, As a small follow up I will mention that both after market hoses I bought for the upper radiator hose were 1 1/2" on the pump side and 1 3/4" on the radiator side. The original Motorcraft hose was 1 1/2" on both ends . As a short term fix I tightened the hose clamp enough to k...

Getting ready for cold weather...
Hi all, I am doing prewinter work this weekend on my XR. I have a three foot section of (Gates 24810) 5/8th inch silicone hose and the upgraded stainless steel (Gates 32310) hose clamps for that along with the best (Gates 32751) radiator hose clamps for the upper radiator hose which I recently chang...

Re: DIY Air box
Hi all,
Looks great and should work very well! If you want the wrinkled paint look like the OEM airbox VHT WRINKLE PLUS paint will do that very well. I redid my airbox recently and the finish looked original with that paint used for it. It would look cool on your airbox as well, I believe.
Cheers

Re: XR at LGGPR racing yesterday
Hi all, Here is a link to a site for the XR I saw racing in Garnett: http://www.xr4tiracing.com/imsa_is.html I went up to him after he had been on track and mentioned that I have an XR4Ti as well. He had a classic Merk owner response: How many do you have? I am sure I was a disappointment as I said ...
