Timing Belt "off by a tooth" symptoms?
I just redid my timing belt for a second time (to fix the position of the distributor) and I think I may have screwed up the marks. It took me a while to get the crank and cam gear marks to stay lined up after tension was applied, but I eventually did and then took of for a spin. Idle holds fine, th...

Is it possible to swap rear springs w/o undoing the half shafts?
I just replaced the front struts and springs yesterday.. and I'd like to do the rear today. But when reading through the procedure in the manual it calls for undoing the half shafts. Can I get by with just lowering the differential? Can a spring compressor fit in there? Is there another trick you Me...

Re: Is there a quick fix for the Lower Radiator Hose?
I've never transferred that crusty internal spring over. Those corrode and deteriorate...and send little pieces of metal through the cooling system. 16psi cooling system isn't enough to collapse a stock hose in good condition with no other cooling system issues. However, if yours in in good shape a...

Re: Lower Radiator Hose (and other cooling system tips)
And before I get flamed... I searched the forum, the FB group, and the googles and didn't find anything that seemed to make sense.

Is there a quick fix for the Lower Radiator Hose?
I'm finally getting around to tackling some major maintenance for my 1985 XR this weekend. 1: timing belt + alternator belts 2: water pump 3: radiator hoses 4: intercooler mounts (to replace my zip-ties) But it just dawned on me that I don't have, and can't find, a lower radiator hose. Is there any ...

Re: New to Merkurs - Where is this oil coming from?
See if you can't get the full workshop manual on pdf. When you are doing all those tune-up steps also clean out the IACV. Just spray carb cleaner into it until the runoff is clear. I have the full workshop manual in binder form I just haven't had a minute to go through it. I had surgery yesterday s...

Re: Proper Brake feel (and wheel questions)
Every new in box MC I've seen says to bench bleed it before installing. Power bleeding doesn't eliminate all air in the MC unit. YMMV Well, yes, I also powerbled the MC before I installed it. I forgot to mention it. Bench bleeding is a slightly different operation than a regular bleed. The lines ne...

Re: Proper Brake feel (and wheel questions)
Even the stock caliper pistons were a little over sized for the car interms of hydraulics. Mid-86 saw the larger master cylinder (15/16" to 1"). 1/16" doesn't sound like much, but it is about a 14% increase in area, which is not small. Back on topic, not really sure where air could b...

Re: Proper Brake feel (and wheel questions)
What front brakes do you have? Are they stock? This sounds indicative of an early MC car with the Mustang PBR brakes. IF they are an aluminum 2- piston design it's those and they are over sized, which would cause late engagement and less than optimal modulation (easy to lock). From what I can tell ...

Re: New to Merkurs - Where is this oil coming from?
So it turned out to be the PCV valve. The car had a motorcraft EV127a in there already. But it was old. And grey. And when I went to pull it out I had to do so piece by piece... it had completely disintegrated/disassembled itself in the hose. The new one seems to have solve that issue. But now after...

Re: New to Merkurs - Where is this oil coming from?
oookaayyy... I know the Motorcraft EV127a is the PCV valve to get. But low and behold FedEx lacks the ability to deliver on time or take responsibility for a lost package. I'm still waiting for the PCV valve to arrive (even ordered another one from Amazon just to see who wins) but in the mean time.....
