Re: 4x4 Ranger $500

Looks like a great candidate for a Lima swap. Ya a 2.3 turbo truck would be cool. Isn't there a thread on here explaining the full conversion xr donor drive train going into a ranger? I can't find it when I search. I don't recall seeing one here, but I do know that there are Ranger forums, which I'...

Re: RockAuto Closeout Items

IIRC it goes in the false bulkhead area behind the heater control valve. You have to be sure to drape some wiring and a vacuum hose across it in order for it to work properly. It may be useful to pack the area with expanding foam to keep it from rattling around. Should I change the Carburetor Choke...

I've always liked this car. Nice P1800 Wagon redux.

Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

Yeah, and some of us have seen (and drooled over) the single-turbo version Godfrey put into his XR-- and lest we forget, a twin-turbo version was used to great effect in the Noble M12. I've always liked its light weight, compactness, displacement, and general DOHC goodness.

Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

I thought about the 24 valved DOHC 3.0 liter Taurus motor... Yes, very good motor. Problem out here in CA is it's a transverse FWD. Don't know what the swap regs are lately, but back a few years one of the swap qualifiers is that the donor had to be come from the same layout. Their reasoning is tha...

Re: Water Pump Question

I prefer the hole on top for the simple reason that it allows you to see it more easily. Functionally, a weep hole is a weep hole; it'll only weep if the seal fails. Not sure why there's any variation in this, but I've seen it myself, and was happy to see the last one I bought have it on top. :dunno

Re: Door Card R&R

Edit 2: No tips or clues on fixing up the moonroof cover.... that thing confounds me. Hopefully someone else has some tips there. I don't know how he does it, but Jeff Herson has posted some amazing before/after rejuvenations on these covers-- maybe he'll let us in on that. Of course, we have all a...

Re: Coolant Reservoir

FWIW, and with the caveat that I haven't tried it myself, I have seen a local enthusiast, known for quality builds and very well-cared for Merkurs, run no coolant bottle as such; but just a generic aluminum filler cap fitting, which spliced into the upper radiator hose. It had a vent hose which went...

Re: Door Card R&R

Why not inquire of folks like Jeff Herson of Merkur Parts Midwest for some good, used replacements? http://www.merkurmidwest.com Russ Harness of Rapido Group may have some as well, but his website is down atm. Give him a call 541-544-3333. I also see these things come up from time to time in the Cla...

Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

Interesting article, which somehow fails to mention the revised cooling system for '89, larger backlight with the single-wing, etc., etc. I know they couldn't list every damned thing, but those are fairly significant, and the car had relatively few changes through its production (too few, which at l...

Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

I think a better V8 swap answer is an LS-series engine, so lightweight, compact, tons of aftermarket support, etc. Really? Even after I said there's no way I'd consider an LS swap? Or are you just being ornery? (Just so I'm clear, I'd burn the car to the ground, after pushing it off a cliff, after ...

Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

Ford did build a limited run of V8 Sierras for the South African market as well as the YBs in the Cossie, and many other variants. As per the YB, it's an awesome engine, but no longer practical, especially given the advent of other new cammer fours like the Ecoboost, etc. I think a better V8 swap an...
