McCreight is dead on when he writes about this being a nearly impossible task if you get boots that are close, but not the exact fitment for the XR. The issue is getting the larger end over the rack housing. A while back, someone had a post about using the end of baseball bat along with some boiling...

Merkantile Online Store
We've worked out a protocol with the embroiderer to enable everyone to purchase merchandise with the MCA logo without MCA having to carry any inventory. Here's what you have to do: 1) Go to the embroiderer's website ( http://www.embroidery-web.com ) and set up your own personal account (do not put t...

My 88 XR has a roof-mount FUBA antenna. This really looks sharp on the XR as it looks more European than before. I'll install one of these on my 89 model once it quits operating. From my perspective, it's not worth fooling around with the rear window factory system once it begins acting up. Here's a...

Another possible fix for your dipstick level is to use the FL-300 oil filter rather than the FL-1A. In 1986, the Merkur owner's manual showed the FL-300 as the oil filter to use. The smaller oil volume in the FL-300 brings the oil level up to the full mark. (Note: I think 1986 was the only year the ...

Bi-Wing XR in Upstate SC
Coming home from GSP airport this afternoon, I spotted a bi-wing XR in the driveway of a house at the intersection of 417 & Scuffletown Rd, just outside Simpsonville, SC.. This guy looks like a Ford owner, as Ford cars have been in the driveway for several years. The XR looks like a recent acqui...

1985 Strato Silver XR4Ti in Troy, MI
I was in Detroit area for business meetings on 05/04 & 05/05. Had lunch on Friday, May 5th, at Spectadium, a local sports bar & grill on Livernois. When I pulled into the lot, I found a really nice looking 1985 Strato Silver XR4Ti with cloth interior parked there. I took some time to peruse ...

Track Days - Carolina Motorsports Park
For those of us that reside in the SE, there is an upcoming track day weekend on April 22/23 at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC. Additional track days are currently scheduled for remainder of the year. Take the opportunity to drive your Merkur as it was intended on this 2.235 mile, 14 turn ...

I've always used mid-range of the torque spec when tightening lug nuts. 87-88 ft-lbs. I've never had any issues with studs or warped discs (other than the normal wear that occurs due to poor disc design on the XR's). Like others, when having new tires installed and/or re-balancing being done, I use ...
