Re: Low voltage idiot light on after Instrument Cluster R&R / MerkMeter Install

as often one or both of those clips has lost a part of its retaining fingers from removal of the cluster. On one of my donor clusters indeed the retainer is broken. That alerted me to be gentle and thus far I've not broken anything. As you can perhaps surmise by the added velcro retainers, both the...

Re: Low voltage idiot light on after Instrument Cluster R&R / MerkMeter Install

Not so fast there Sparky.... I can't explain at all why the MerkMeter isn't lighting up. I didn't start the car last night - just turned the key on and got the one LED to light up on the MerkMeter so I (over) confidently proclaimed victory. But now I don't even get that one LED lighting up ever. An...

Re: Frozen (?) Rear Caliper

Ugh, every Scorpio I ever had eventually did this. It starts in cold weather only but will eventually happen all the time. The little seal where the e-brake lever on the caliper enters the body is worn, allowing moisture in to the bore. The resulting film of rust makes the brake stick. My black Scor...

Re: Type 9 (T9) Short Shifter Options

If indeed the T9 forks are steel/iron, indeed there might be less of a need than the T5. But does the short-shifter make it any easier to find the gears? My wife has had that complaint with the T9 Scorpio. At least it wouldn't be as "buzzy" with the 2.9 Vs. the 2.3. I would say you should...

Re: Type 9 (T9) Short Shifter Options

Unlike most of the after-market T-5 shifters, I don't see that any of the T-9 shifters have any provision for positive stops, correct? Right, and I question if they would even be necessary. The T5 is a hard shifting, fairly unrefined transmission, made even more so with a short shifter. It is not c...

Re: Type 9 (T9) Short Shifter Options

No. 2: The link you have there appears to be the same, or similar to the "Comp" shifter I got from BAT years ago (I believe it's what Burton Power sells/sold and is from Quaife). If this is the same, this is one of the best modifications I ever made to my car (I replaced the shift rail ny...

Re: Heater Control Valve (HCV) Elimination

Funny enough, I'll also be having a mechanical slider in the Scorpio once I get around to installing the Euro manual controls. I've now got everything I need for that - just need to do it. Hey, I know a guy who had that exact same plan and even amassed all the parts too 8). He never started the pro...

Re: Heater Control Valve (HCV) Elimination

I always strive to simplify my engine bay, so eliminating the HCV and associated plumbing is on the hit list when I do a coolant system overhaul this spring. Obviously this has been much discussed on the XR platform, but I can't recall seeing anyone do it on a Scorpio. Will I be the first? P.S. Ed,...

Re: Door ajar switches acting up.

A button switch as located in Dmitri's post pic seems to be what newer model cars use re door ajar warning light. But the XR (and I assume Scorpio) uses a dedicated door ajar switch mounted on each latch: 20191121_170312-586x259.jpg YMMV That was my pic of my very own Turbo Scorpio, taken just befo...

Re: Door ajar switches acting up.

I think I'm a little past that. If I repeatedly open and close the offending door about 20 times I can get the light to go out. But first or second time after I go to open it again it will come back, and then I have to open and close them a bunch of times to get it to go out again. I'll keep workin...

Re: "Frozen" Rear Door Latch

My partScoprio has had seized up rear door latch since the day I brought it home. Prior to my ownership, the car sat for 20 years, so the door was likely last opened some time in the 90's. The exterior handle was already broken by the time I got it. I've removed the door card and the rods are readi...

Re: Coolant Temperature Sender

Guys, The Merkurs use gauges manufactured by VDO. Many VDO gauges of the era used sensors with the same profile, that is ~250 ohms at the "bottom" end of whatever scale (like cold water/oil or empty gas tank), and ~20 ohms at the top end of the scale. The coolant temp and fuel fill gauges ...

Re: Improving Scorpio A/C Performance

The only thing holding R134a back (assuming you've changed the dryer and expansion valve for compatible items) in a stock scorpio is the condenser. The stock serpentine condenser has the phase change and heat rejection happening at only one single spot. That worked fine for R12, but 134a requires a ...

Re: IAC Issues, Scorp and XR, Maybe the "EEC-IV CHIEF" Knows How To Resolve?

Some years ago I inadvertently stumbled on the root cause of this while datalogging my turbo scorpio. I didn't have a bad TPS, rather, it was faulty wiring power distribution wiring, but the symptoms are exactly the same: The car drives fine for a while, then as if by magic, when coming to a stop du...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade

Electric fans will draw amps. I've observed in both 88 and 89 fan clutched Scorpios that the electrical system just doesn't produce voltage at the battery as does the XR. On my XRs running with headlights and blower on high I consistently get voltage no lower than in mid 13s (14.4 with headlights a...
