Re: 8UA in XR reduce code output
Brad, my plan was to use the diagnostics to determine just what I need to try. And yes everything done outside of the PCM. I even thought of just wiring in the trans solenoids, but then I thought they may not last long if they're being constantly activated while not submerged in trans oil. I'll upd...

Re: Scorpio A/C Troubleshooting
Thanks Ed. Hope my AC problems aren't keeping you up at night looking for solutions. :) Only viewed both briefly, so I'm gonna have to view the two of them over and over before I "get it." The schematic/dynamic flow in the second one throws me off because I keep looking at the gauges to s...

Re: Scorpio A/C Troubleshooting
Thanks guys. Ed, agreed (at least from what I read in the shop manual) that the expansion valve is likely the culprit, which could also be causing the compressor to knock. I'll have to check into how to evac the system (probably just find a shop). You've misinterpreted your results. In the terminol...

Re: Scorpio A/C Troubleshooting
Anyway, I've got a fully charged A/C system, but almost no cooling. 105psi on the high side, 100 on the low pressure side. Compressor sounds like its knocking, and never made that noise before. Manuals says it could be the 3-way expansion valve, but I have no way to testing w/o evacuating the whole...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
That said, today I decided I needed to make sure I hadn't created an issue with all the other work done on the car and so the original Bosch alternator went back in. It worked fine, 14.2V across the battery terminals, 14.15 at the D+ terminal, and no more dim battery light. Undeterred, I immediatel...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
And this off an old Beetle forum.... measure the voltage to a good ground on each side of the lamp. Just curious what it would be? In an ideal world, it would be 14 volts on the ring and maybe a little bit more on the tip of the bulb. If it has, say 15volts on the 61wire - the tip of the bulb - and...

Re: Volvo Fused Power Distribution Box & Refreshing Major 12V Connections
Dug into the harness on the parts car today looking for splice S1004. As you may be able to tell from the pic, it's buried in that big wad of wires behind the instrument cluster, exactly in line with the steering shaft. All you should need to remove is the upper dash to get to it. As expected, the ...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
So basically the warning light in the cluster is not seeing ANY output from the Lamp circuit of the alternator. Good God, could it be as simple as a lousy alternator case GND? Next step is to run a dedicated GND from the alternator case directly to the battery. If that doesn't solve it, I'll essent...

Re: Alternate Alternator Upgrade - Nissan/Infiniti
So we've verified that the alternator is totally fine, right? But I'm at a loss as to what else to check on the car. You've found that the alternator and warning lamp circuit work properly in your "bench" setup, while it does not when patched in to the car, so consider how the alt lamp/fi...

Re: Volvo Fused Power Distribution Box & Refreshing Major 12V Connections
I've updated the topic heading as I cut and paste Dimitri's post below on this topic from an earlier thread. It's worthy of being in a couple places and relevant to this topic. Dimitri, can you be any more specific on the location of S1004? Obviously I should have gone hunting for it last week when...

Re: Easy, Simple Broken Tabs Repair
What I've found, though, is that a LOT of the Merkur trim and other plastics are a base form of ABS, which means they can be "welded" with the common ABS cement used for ABS pipes and fittings in construction. Not all plastics, of course, but surprisingly quite a few. It's not an adhesive...

Re: High Idle - IAC Valve
I totally respect Dmitiri's expertise on these cars but his explanation linked to above by Brad doesn't point to the cause of the sudden high idle. (I also question that a sudden decline in system voltage from say ~normal 13.5 to a volt or 2-3-4v less would diminish the TPS VREF of 5.0v as he posit...

Re: Were all Merkurs painted in clear coat?
My Scorpio has the usual clear coat peeling and fading of the base coat, but the black XR has never had it. But, while polishing up a small area of the rear quarter panel, it's now faded, and I can't get it back to glossy. I've repaired a few paint areas all over this black car, and it never showed...

Re: Yanking engine & tranny without a hoist
I've never done this on an XR, but I just use an engine hoist for this maneuver on other cars. LIke; https://img.sacsaabs.org/02935door/02935door_engineout.jpg If the front bumper is off, you can use the bumper brackets for this maneuver. Works great. On the XR - and I'm probably missing something ...
