Don’t forget the brake hoses. Brake fluid breaks down the hoses overtime and they actually collapse internally. Happens all the time. Your car is 30+ years old now.

The body mounts on the car that the bracket bolts to are not in plane. One side is lower than the other. A stock Merkur bracket takes up this difference. Some aftermarket brackets don’t account for the difference in the body. You may have to shim your bracket/ mount or both.

I've had good success using heli-coils if the nuts are not spinning.

If they are then, well, you've got the right idea.
