Re: New DD and trying to decide what direction with my XR.

I've had a bunch of fox body V8s. Mustang, Thunderbird, Cougar, Fairmont, Capri. All fun cars and cheap and easy to make go fast. But none of them were special. An XR4ti is very special because of the unique circumstances of its limited production. IMO, the 2.3L turbo (or Cosworth etc..) is an essen...

Re: Fuel pumps wont come on

I would run a hot jumper wire to the fuse and see what happens. If the pump comes on then you know the problem is before the fuse box.

Re: Expensive stereo guys....

Thought I'd bump this old thread from 6 years ago. Have tried a couple of different setups with my 87 XR. What I'm currently using and am very satisfied wth is -- Alpine single din head unit. USB and aux inputs. 2 pairs of stereo speaker outs w/hi pass. 1 pair of subwoofer preamp outs w/lo pass. -- ...

Re: What is the best XR4Ti?

I forgot about bi-wing mono white k2 edition with ski rack. I guess you could sell the skis and put a snowboard or bike on top. When I bought my straight and clean white '87 XR 5 years ago, I knew very little about Merkurs at all. It was a purchase of opportunity. Still it had been modified in the ...

Re: Electrical problems beyond my skill Any advice how to proceed

Jeff is definitely great with the Merkurs plus he's also only an hour drive away from me. In fact, I bought my XR from him and he gave me a super deal on it.

I may have to contact him for advice on this.

Thanks very much for the info on fusable links.

Electrical problems beyond my skill Any advice how to proceed

I'm having some catastrophic electrical issues with my 87 XR. I bought the car 3 years ago and drove it as a secondary pleasure vehicle. It had numerous issues typical of these 30 year old cars and I fixed them one by one, mostly in the winter months when I stored it. When I stopped driving it last ...

Re: Car Wash Under Carriage Spraying

I rarely drive my XR in snow (I have a $300 Escort to beat on in the winter) but if and when I do, I always hose it down at the local "U-Spray-It" place and that includes underneath. I've never had a problem with soaking the engine, as long as I'm careful not to blast water at high pressur...

Re: 89 xr4ti

Thought I'd resurrect this thread because my question relates to the OP. I have a set of 16" x 7.5 wheels from an 87 T'bird. I think they're called the "snowflake" wheels. They have the 35mm offset. http://www.tcstangs.com/forum/attachment.php?attachmentid=13246&d=1315931173 I've ...

Re: Anyone DD theirs?

When I bought mine two years ago, it had a lot of issues but was essentially clean and straight with a strong motor and transmission. I bought it in the winter and fixed the major issues and then drove it as much as I could the following summer but had another vehicle that was more reliable. Then ag...

Re: First Xr4ti

If you're burning oil, one of the common culprits in this car is a clogged oil return line from the turbo. This is located underneath the turbo and runs to the bottom of the block. The stock hose is flexible metal and is often damaged or kinked. When it gets blocked it restricts oil flow and this so...

Re: LA3 question

My understanding is that there is little benefit to that swap with an otherwise stock setup. The improvement is to be found in a greater capacity for airflow that is only realized when you make other modifications such as increasing boost, running fully 3" exhaust, and doing the necessary suppo...
