Project Bronze Turd

Just realized I never started a build thread here for my 89 xr. I'm just going to copy and paste some things from merkursport to get caught up, but mostly just pics:) So this is the 89 Xr I picked up from Merkd ya. I haven't picked a name out for her yet, she hasn't quite earned that, so she is curr...

Re: Lower intake removal.

Be wary gasket-matching the intake ports of the head. There's not a lot of material there to remove before going into the water jacket. Also don't port the floors of the runners other than cleaning them up. Another big suggestion I can give that many people overlook...make sure the port walls of the...

Re: orange wire turbo outlet

That is your o2 sensor reference ground. It's been debated, but I feel the major consensus is to keep it at the turbo and don't adjust the length of that wire since that could change the resistance of the wire and skew o2 readings.

Never thought about using zip ties with the solder iron to plastic weld!

Re: Mesh Grill Bonding...Probably a 'Rookie' Question

I'm trying to remember how I did this on my Ranger when I was a kid, but I'm 95% I used an epoxy. Autozone has some 3M epoxy for plastic and IIRC, that was the ticket. It held up for years, was still good when I got rid of the truck as well. Just make sure to sand and clean the areas where you inten...

Replacement ball joint boots?

Does anyone know of a source to obtain replacement ball joint boots for the front control arms? Taking apart the front end today, I found the driver's side boot ripped (dry-rotted) and the passenger's side is almost ready to rip. The joints are good and clean, lower mileage, just the car has sat unt...

Re: forge bov question

There is no diaphram, just 2 o-rings. I couldn't come up with the correct word for that piece, plug, stopper, whatchamacallit...so I used diaphragm, lol. But as far as testing it, if you're going to pressurize the intake to check for leaks, it is good practice to remove the followers from the intak...

Re: forge bov question

Do you have a true forge or one of the knock offs? I had a knock off once that the plastic lower diaphragm wouldn't seat correctly once in a while. IIRC, I lightly sanded down the edges and then greased the edges with bearing grease and never had an issue again.

Re: Is it possible to take off the TFI without a (special) t

5.5mm long socket that has been ground down a little bit to a narrower outside diameter works. I bought mine from autozone, IIRC, and after slightly grinding the outside, it fit like a glove.

Let me get in touch with my uncle, he might be able to help out there. He just started a new job as a director at the same college I work at, so it may be iffy, but I will ask.

Re: AC delete. How to?

Best bet would be studying a wiring diagram and deciphering it to see if going to a larger wire would have a negative impact on that circuit. I can't think of any instance off the top of my head where a larger gauge wire would be ill-advised.

Re: AC delete. How to?

I'm considering doing what you're talking about with re-doing the entire wiring in the car. I've already removed every bit of interior and all engine bay components, so now would definitely be the time. I work in the A/V industry so I have a TON of wiring available to me but the problem is most of i...
