I've been posting all over the place regarding painting XR's. Color changes - ouch. If you have an '88 or up you can't get the widows painted correctly at the stationaries. The 'w/strips' are hard rubber and the glass, for all practical purpose, cannot be removed. This means you can't get a PERFECT ...

I have essentially that same set up - an early SVO 'Stang trans. The original C3 speedo gear is sort of OK. The speedo reads very close to 5 mph low at 60 mph. This is approximate. It is close enough that I'm not messing with it despite having teen age drivers - it just isn't that far off. I DID nee...

Use all the net resources. I have pics on another site in the "gallery" section. They are designed to be used with the Merkur Encyclopedia info. Most all sites are NOT 'stand alone' - you should look at all the sites.

A million years ago I was given that style at the Lincoln/Merc dealer. Didn't notice it and still have it NIB, never used it. It had to be 10 - 15 years ago. I thought it was for a Scorp or something!

Granted, we live in a low crime suburb, but we don't lock our cars - ever. This habit started back when we had TR and Corvette converts. If anyone wanted to get in it was no problem. To be honest I laugh at those who lock their SUV's at high school ball games in the burbs - they are nuts. I taught f...

First off, it's your post I referenced in a post on the 'other' forum (I couldn't figure out how to upload on this forum). So.... I need to edit again to say "see Angelfire post on DS align". Anyway, I put my jack stands in this area and the crossmember gets a little banged up if it's a da...

My Blizzaks rub on the wife's '89 (41k, no broken springs, 195/60 - 15, 'new' style Blizzaks). Left turns, full lock. Winterforce (not the best tire as they aren't round) do not rub on my '88 (110k, no broken springs, still original struts). Camber, etc. OK - shows production variation on a car with...

starter field coils

At the time I posted remarks about the field coils and starters being different on XR's I didn't envision needing to take my starter apart (I did take it out this week for a T5 install). Unfortunately I found parts of the roller clutch in the old auto bell, so the starter needed repair. The local NA...

Our '89's (I painted both myself) are riding around with ~$800.00 worth of paint and body materials - incl. sandpaper, spreaders, etc., so your concern about finding some alternative to custom match is sensible (black is "cheap", comparatively). 'Rosso' isn't '89 red and you for sure can't...

starter 'depth', shims, drives

Not a big, critical topic, just some observations on XR's. My daily driver '88 is getting a T5. When I pulled out the C3 drive roller clutch spring parts fell out. The starter was working perfect. When I put a front pump seal in this car 5 years ago the C-clip and roller was similarly damaged (at th...

I don't know how Ford parts ID work. I worked in Chevy service for 10 years, but never in parts, but I thought there were like "groups" and such - it was over 20 years ago. Maybe the heat shield (the tin piece) was part of the whole starter and hence was in a different main area under 'com...

heat and field coils

This is a variation on "I think". Many (19?) years ago I had a bushing issue with an OE starter in our then '85 XR. The parts manager at the Merc dealer - a smart guy - said the starter for the XR was listed with special parts. He said the field coils were different. While different runs a...
