Re: Bleeding T-Bird/Taurus calipers

I have the T-bird rear caliper setup. 1. The calipers do get to be reversed from the t-bird I believe this will enable the parking brake cable to work as well as position the brake line connection high. 2. The brake lines then connect to the caliper via a "Banjo bolt" with a bleeder fitting - this i...

Re: Another Oil thread. What oil to use?

I use a 10w30 oil that has a high zinc content to reduce engine wear, originally I had used Mobile 1 but around 140K miles my original cam had become very noisy so I switched to Valvoline VR-1 full synthetic racing oil which has a high ZDDP content. There are other similar oils out there. My rationa...

Re: No fuel pump......

Do you have an OBD1 code reader? Do you get any codes? I would suggest that you check all the easy things first ie; wires, dist cap, TPS, IAC etc, etc
Did you replace the fuel filter and remove the external pump?

Re: No fuel pump......

Perhaps now it would be a good time to update us on the current status of your car? Does it crank, start, run, how long etc, etc?

Re: No fuel pump......

IMHO making a modification, ie: the LA3, to resolve a problem is not a good idea, it could just complicate things further.

Merkurs are not that complicated or prone to failures than any other 25+ year old car. In fact my '86 has had very few issues that were not "self inflicted"

Re: Rear Disc swap, poor pad contact on rotor

IMHO I don't think that a flexible line will solve your problem as the part of the caliper that the brake line attaches to does not move. That said a flexible line is needed to allow for suspension movement.

I suspect that you have the wrong brackets for those calipers.

Re: Rear Disc swap, poor pad contact on rotor

The first pic of the brackets seems to look like they have a tapered edge where the caliper mounts - could they be reversed?

Re: Rear Disc swap, poor pad contact on rotor

I have a different setup than yours - I have T-bird calipers, with them you had to reverse the install location ie: install the t-bird RR on the Merkur LR and t-bird LR on the XR RR, to get the e-brake to work, but also use a "Banjo" fitting to add a another bleeder fitting at the brake line connect...

Re: Camber eccentric bolts, rear beam, and nylon STA bushing

Before you embark upon that effort, I suggest that you replace the diff mount, the stock mount isn't great when new and a sagging mount will affect the suspension. The new MC2 mount is a nice piece

I suggest that you pressure test your cooling system - these car need a tight system to work properly!
