Re: Return of the Merkur Mile in 2015?

I've wanted to go to carlisle since I was 14, maybe this year it will happen! Not likely though. The "Merkur Mile" sounds like a great time, maybe I'll get really lucky and be able to make it.

Re: The Story of Ellie...

If I had another merk that looked that good, I'd be questioning my decision to fix my first!
But i've just got the one, so I don't have to worry about it.

Re: The Story of Ellie...

I'm going to be in a similar situation soon. Got my XR before my 16th b-day, my grandpa said "if it still runs when you're 16 its yours". It was a dream of mine to have an XR since riding in my Mom's black '88, or was it an '89, I can't remember. It's got tons of miles, and it certainly isn't in gre...

Re: Power Steering Rack De-Power (or Rebuild)

good to know, thanks.
I had heard the same thing about potential lock-ups, but my car has done 2.5 years and about 7000 miles de-powered, so I'm not all that worried about it.

Re: XR wheels

I quite like the look of the factory 2000-2004 focus wheels, they're 4x108, 15x6, and 52.5 offset. Is that too much offset for the wheel to be usable? Or could spacers be used to negate that? I think with a different paint color they could look pretty good. The SVT wheels are 17x7 and the offset is ...

Re: Power Steering Rack De-Power (or Rebuild)

The power steering is out on my 89 XR, but the rack hasn't been de-powered yet (I don't know if the power steering is repairable, but I like it just fine without). how much of a difference does it make? I don't think the car is particularly hard to turn at low speeds even without de-powering the rac...

Re: My Build Thread: Project "Rain Cloud"

SOOOO thankful the master let go at Ray's and not driving. Car had ZERO brakes...to the point where brakes to the floor wouldn't stop the car from rolling the rear in 1st at idle. Sorry for replying to a super old post, but I felt the need to share a brake experience I had in my '89 XR last year dr...

So true! Despite the uselessness of that swap, it is kind of intriguing to me.

Re: Rebuilding an XR4TI

Looking forward to hear what types of mods you do to your XR and Welcome to the Forum! :cheers Well, if people are interested in my banged up car( I hit a deer last winter :frown ), i'll be sure to post what I do to it, but I won't be home until April, so until then I'll just have to satisfy myself...

Re: Rebuilding an XR4TI

Sweet XR. Mine is my first car as well, though my dad bought a b5 a4 that I've been driving since I didn't want to risk driving my merkur to UT from CO, especially since I don't have tools here to fix it. Yours is going to be far cooler than mine. mine is an 89 with 254000 miles, I want to top mount...

Re: Denver area XR's?

I can throw my name in this list now too, I won't be any help, I'm new to working on these cars, and I'm going to School in UT, but I live near castle rock. When I'm back home in april I would love to meet some of the other XR owners in the area.

Re: Couple of problem solving q's

The power tapering off at high revs may point to worn spark plug wires (use Motorcraft, or spring for Magnecors if you want it to be years and years before you ever worry about them again), but of course, check all tuning settings (base timing, cam timing, TPS, idle, etc.) and check for codes. The ...

Re: Couple of problem solving q's

Also, how difficult of a job will replacing them be if that is the case? (The most in depth mechanical work I've done before this is a master cylinder, wheel cylinders, and replacing the valve cover gasket) If this is the depth of your mechanical work then you are not currently qualified to do any ...
