That's been done too! Whatever it takes! :headbang

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

So did you.mount your unit on the garage floor? Not yet. I managed to get it done with the plywood base, but that just added an extra challenge. Fortunately I have 4 iron bricks that weight about 50lbs each. Between me standing on the plywood and those I was able to keep the changer somewhat statio...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Finally got my first 17" tire installed yesterday. I probably should have started with a higher profile tire to learn on - lower profile tires (this was a 45) are much more difficult. I think I managed to do everything wrong along the way, so I managed to learn a lot. Here's a couple things... ...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Back on topic, I had considered getting a wheel centering cone for this thing last year, but they were selling for ~$50 and weren't essential, so I didn't bother. Zoom ahead one year and China is knocking these things out for $10.88 shipped! So I got one. https://www.ebay.com/itm/126189014719 I hate...

Be sure to specify the correct class - we're in the 641 - 655 range - and Merkur Club of America as your club.

Ivory FTW: Or not.... "A classic Ivory soap bar contains sodium tallowate, sodium cocoate or sodium palm kernelate, water, sodium chloride, sodium silicate, magnesium sulfate, and fragrance. The soap has a determined pH value of 9.5." "If aluminium is exposed to very strong acid or a...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

No time to verify yet, but I'm pretty confident that I got my answer. The problem was plain to see from my picture for those that have experience. You need to push the portion of the tire bead already on the wheel toward the center of the wheel where the diameter is smaller and thus allows the tire ...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Have you tried using the stock bar and not the duckbill? I use tire lube from NAPA, and I removed the red paint from, and polished, the paw on the stock bar. This greatly reduced the risk of marring the wheels. I had no damage to the rims edges when I did the Sport Trac and Scorpio tires. I recall ...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Sometimes the tire bead on the opposite end rides up too high, instead of staying deeper in the rim and makes things way too tight. So if you can use your knees to keep that side down while pulling the bar around it can help. I actually thought about that ^^^ but wondered if it might work to my ben...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

I did some reading and found that vegetable oil works as well as any commercial tire lube. Long story short, very little change. The duck-head glides around easily until the effort goes up pretty quickly and comes to a halt. Using a longer leverage bar only gets me a little further. I feel like I'd ...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

Got a couple 14" tires removed yesterday as well as a 17". I tried to go ahead and mount a new 17" tire and was not successful. The bottom half of the tire was no trouble, but I was only able to get the outer side on about 75% of the way before I couldn't spin the duckhead assembly an...

Re: Harbor Freight Tire Changer Upgrades

It's been a busy year but I wanted to actually remove some tires with this thing before year-end. And so today I removed a couple junk 14" tires from some "phone dial" wheels. I found this video one of the more helpful ones... https://youtu.be/DrKbuE74iqU?si=lkSvWEtjrOs9g47z A couple ...

Re: RAPIDO GROUP

Congrat's Peter. I recall talking to Russ a few years ago when he talked to me about the future of Rapido. Frankly, I didn't see much hope for his "Merkur Ranch" and I feared the cars would just get crushed when he passed. I couldn't be happier with the way things have worked out and I app...
