I could be wrong but the boot shouldn't be compressed at all. At least none of my T5 conversions ever have. Is it 1/2in from the dust boot? That sounds perfectly normal to me, but again, I could be wrong..

The motorcraft and autolite are exactly the same plug. 764.

Check that your plugs are gapped correctly to between .30-.35. I actually run mine around .28. Make sure you've got the right ones as well. Don't worry about fancy platinum or anything. Good old fashioned Autolites work best. Start there.
