Re: Replacement for PBR phenolic pistons

I don't know this, but I wonder if pistons from a 4th gen F-body will fit these calipers. They are both PBR calipers with dual 45mm pistons from about the same time period.

Re: Having some electrical issues with my new (to me) XR4TI

On an '85 I would also suspect the battery cables. I think the early years came with unusual batteries using "UT" terminals (I know my '86 did) and sometimes people have some up with some interesting ways to work around that issue. I pointlessly fought janky cables for years before finally...

Re: Replacement for PBR phenolic pistons

Thank you for following up... It's really fantastic when threads don't just die with the thought! I may be going through this soon... The XR has been sitting for about a year, probably the calipers are seized. OTOH, it may prompt me to go with Wilwoods... They aren't all that expensive and then it's...

Re: Setting the e-brake cable length

I may misunderstand how it works, but my belief was the little half-moon "pulley" ensured that the left and right stayed balanced. Shouldn't the cable slide along the pulley such that one caliper is cinched down, then the other?

Re: Remember me asking about turbo life?

What you're seeing on ebay is undoubtedly cheap Chinese turbo. The internet is littered with them. There are typically substantial design shortcuts and quality control is notoriously bad, so while you might get a totally functional turbo you're just as likely (or more likely) to get one that will se...

Re: Remember me asking about turbo life?

Sure, maybe. But given "cheap Chinese turbo" - the ones that spontaneously fail and send shrapnel everywhere - are in the $300 range it just seems really unlikely there could be a quality option at the same price. It's just not something I would put on an engine I wanted to keep.

Re: Remember me asking about turbo life?

I would be dubious about the quality of a $300 turbo.

Re: Remember me asking about turbo life?

It would be a tough call for me... $400 for a rebuild vs $900 for a modern, name brand GT turbo. It's a big spread, strong arguments on both sides.

Re: Volvo S40 Electric Power Steering Swap

I don't know what I am doing, but I wonder if something like this could be a part of the puzzle: https://www.mrs-electronics.com/fileadmin/user_upload/products/datasheets/1_114_Datasheet_Micro_Gateway_US.pdf It's a simple CAN gateway - an analog sensor on one side (say, vehicle speed) and a CAN inte...

Re: Volvo S40 Electric Power Steering Swap

Well, if you go back look for the sensor. :D Cars that I am familiar with that have a steering angle sensor (Ze Germans and Saab) have them integrated into the column electronics, impossible to separate. On those cars, steering angle goes over CAN, but the Mazda having a separate connection for the ...

Re: Volvo S40 Electric Power Steering Swap

Interesting... this is similar to the earlier Mazda ones where the steering angle sensor connects directly to the controller rather than through CAN. Did you happen to grab that sensor? I wonder what it gets through CAN... maybe just vehicle speed? One maybe upside of this device is that it's used o...

Old school repair manual, made of trees

I thought I'd lost this when I moved in 2010, but located it this past weekend. In the intervening time, a friend of mine - who actually went to Merkur mechanic school in the '80s - bequeathed me his manual... and I definitely don't need two. This manual came with my '86 when I bought it... It's nev...

Re: Volvo S40 Electric Power Steering Swap

I lied .. I had NOT seen that thread before, or didn't read it completely. Great find! Seems to support a lot of my guesses on how the pump does and could work....I didn't not know about the config ID, but that may be the bus ID, in which case it makes sense. CAN devices will only talk to one anothe...
