It's an ex-Byrnes rack. World's fastest 4 cylinder car.

Although not your forte JV, salt flat racing Merkurs are rare indeed. Neither gravel nor tarmac. Lakebed!

rack

LOL!!! that is funny. I have a manual rack in my car and I highly reccomend it for a non daily driver. It is a bit to get used to over the super easy steering of the Merkur power steering system.

If you want weight reduction and don't mind sacraficing a little effort it is a nice thing to have.

Well, it should be quite apparent that "weight reduction" is not something the seller is interested in. I mean, it's obvious right? Cause, like, he's selling the manual rack.

Oh I know about the Byrnes car andfor that I can see why somebody wants to save a couple of ounces, maybe a pound or two and also SLOW THE STEERING DOWN.

For any other application I can think of no possible benefits to going to 4 turns lock to lock steering---except novelty so one can try and impress people that you have something nonstandard and that is supposed to be cool, no matter how pointless and retrograde and what fraction of 1% weight might be saved.
Might.

I thought there were some manual racks that were the same number of turns as our cars. German Sierra maybe?

John,

How many XR's have you driven with manual steering racks? What gives you the right to make a statement of any kind in this thread? I think you are a dumbass and you need to check yourself. I have been playing with these cars for 15 years and have owned over 15 of them in that time. Learn, drive, tune, then make accusations.

Thank You,

Same thing that gives you the right, Robert. He's just advising you according to his own experience and opinion-- telling you the truth as he sees it. You don't have to agree, but it will do no harm to consider it.

I think the 4 turns aren't novelty, you'd need that reduction to turn the darned wheel. A Merkur with dead steering is a pain in the ass to turn. 4 turns would make it (the rack) useful. A 2.7 turn manual rack is garbage on the street and even then, a race car with steering like that would tire the driver quickly.

And yes, I think the manual rack came in the 4 door Ghia with the 1.6.
