Well, Greetings from Beautiful Vermont......

Post by HPI-rcr » Thu May 27, 2010 1:33 am

And I gotta say how nice it is to have a group like this, admiring this exquisite automobile.

I have recently become a first-time, and new-to-me owner of a 1987 XR4Ti.

One day I happened to grab a copy of the local Green Mountain Trading Post, and was flipping thru, planning on purchasing a CHEAP set of wheels.

One can usually find a "rig" for about 2000. USD, and that is good enough to get you back and forth to work..... yaddah, yaddah...

A little more, about me and why.....

I am recently coming out of a seven year stretch without an Operators Lisence here in the fine state.... but am now weeks away from it!!!!!

At 44 years old, I never thought I would be walking....but..... IT happens.

So, the car.....

Back to the real reason I am here. A fine representation of the 1987 Variety, Red, and Gray. Typical toys, power windows, manual locks, A/C (what is left of it), and sunroof (manual), and the always corroded Aluminum Wheels of the late 80's cars....

The fella I got it from lived in Lancaster, New Hampshire. I called, got the guys Father, cause HE was at the opening night of the IRON MAN 2 movie......Car was listed for 600.USD, I asked the usual "YOU got an old car, and what does it look like..." questions. It sounded reasonable, so I gave him my email address and asked to see a picture or two.

I got them, and It was still iffy, if you know what I mean.

We drove over, and by the time we got there, they were spraying starter fluid into the intake......trying to get it started, and she finally did.

Turbo gave a little whine, and whir... so I drove it out of the field (where it sat for 2 years), and aired up the tires and let her idle.

This little beast was mine, ALL MINE!!!!!!

I talked to him a bit and we agreed on 500.USD with the complete exhaust intact (but separate), from the FRONT of the Cat, all the way back.

Got the bill of sale, and told him we would have it out by weeks end, and drove home.

Still, to this day, I can't believe it.... I have an XR4Ti!!!!!

Loved them dearly when they were new, and always thought one would be out of my reach........... Such a fine piece of workmanship!!!!

This car, MY car.... has 129,XXX miles, and one rust spot!!!!! All glass, all wings, the radio... you know how that goes..... The windows and all work, and she will sit and idle all day long.

I can't wait to get some new shoes on her, and then drive it down the winding roads of Northeastern Vermont and New Hampshire!!!

If I break down, I can rely on the knowledge I have found here, and will share what ever I know... I am Certified ASE, and have 12 years in the field.... This little jem, with a little polish, will be mine forever.

That is my introduction, and this is my Car. Proud to own it, and proud to share it!

Sincerely,

Jeff Garfield

I strongly suggest you come to Carlisle to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Merkur on June 4-6th. You'll see over a hundred XRs ranging from 100% stock to some really radical custom modifications. In addition you will meet the people you will learn to rely on for technical support or parts.

If you're not there, you'll regret it!

Welcome on board,

Paul

me getting to Carlisle, won't be happening.... sadly. I would love to go, but with no Road Worthy car, and no License to drive with..... won't be happening.

I am, however, really looking forward to some help in the brake and suspension aspects of the car. Starting with where to find stock calipers and wheel cylinders (budget in mind). Shoes, and pads and wires.... blah, blah, blah.....

Also, gotta redo the fuel lines and looking for a Lasting way to do it. Is it possible to run nylon lines all the way, or will that only work on the junctions for the fuel pumps and filter?

And, thanks for the welcome messages, guys....... I am feeling at home.

Jeff

Nice car. Nice story about acquiring it :)

Calipers / etc - check here, a lot of guys have something for sale. And a lot of guys have used parts laying around.

Also check rockauto.com, BAT, mike (merkur.50megs.com ?), merkurpartsmidwest.com (jeff AKA Blugg), etc. mc2racing for your suspension bits. ;)

From parts, to advice........ THANK YOU!

Has anyone seen this:

I figured, for 10 bucks.... better than the 110 bucks for the hard copy.

Any thoughts>

I have not purchased one, but mc²racing sells a complete CD including just about everything. It could be very similar to what you found. Here you go: http://www.mc2racing.com/products/xr4ti ... index.html

I tracked down hard copies prior to realizing that I had a digital option.

For the extra couple bucks the mc2racing one is worth it as it has a lot more "bonus" manuals included on it!
