What octane do you run?

Post by MerkurScorpio »

For a long time I've been running 89-octane in my '89 Scorpio, but decided to switch to 87-octane recently. So what does everyone else here use in their Scorpios and XRs?

I have found that running Shell V-Power 91 octain gives me the best performance and MPG. I have literally tried just about everyting out there but the V-Power is noticeably different. Every now and then I throw a bottle of Lucas fuel injector cleaner in as well and mayby the octain booster, but that is few and far between.

91 or better. MPG and performance suffers, otherwise. MPG went from ~18 to ~21 since the switch.

Alex is right for once. Anything higher than 87 in a Scorp is over kill. It is not a high compression engine. You can get away with 87 in a stock XR, but don't turn up the boost any.

89 Auto I run 87 Octane
87 5-spd Shell V-power only. 93 octane.

The 89 has a Rapido intercooler and limited to 15lbs boost. Runs great on regular. It is also not run very hard.

92 Octane in a stock-ish 87 5 speed, gets better than 32 mpg.

On my car the highest available 93 or 94 usually followed by some octane boost.

Same with T's car.

My car is designed for unleaded fuel so I mainly use Sunoco 94 but once in awhile I will get a few gallons of 100 at the track.

The best we can buy around here is 91--ack! I wouldn't put in anything else, and once in a while, such as if I'm going up into the mountains (which I basically don't do in the summertime), I'll put in some booster. Once in a while also, I'll run across a crappy batch of gas that'll ping a little bit, whereupon immediately in goes the booster. I've learned to buy the good brands of gas whenever possible.
This is my car, and these are my people!

Lucas has a fuel injector cleaner that comes in a quart bottle and treats up to 100 gal. of gas, one of it's main benefits is overcoming bad fuel.

89 @ 15psi and 13deg timing. I think I'm going to back the timing a couple degrees and see what happens.
