Hello,
Does anyone know of any dealership that had Jack Roush make a street version of the 85 - 89 trans am XR4TI's or the IMSA GTO 85 -89 XR4TI's if they did please let me know.

I think we'll need some clarification on the question before we can really answer that. What do you mean by "street version?" Like, the car was riced out (the dealer would have been WAY ahead of their time "ricing" a car out in the mid/late 80s) to look like the Trans-Am/GTO car with vinyl and stickers?brncapri wrote:Does anyone know of any dealership that had Jack Roush make a street version of the 85 - 89 trans am XR4TI's or the IMSA GTO 85 -89 XR4TI's if they did please let me know.
Are you talking about something more serious than a sticker job? Like performance modifications?
I've thought about doing the replica thing, like Ian's car. I think the Trans-Am cars or the Texaco "Star" RS500's would be cool cars to replicate.
Of course, the folks driving around in their red Chevrolet Monte Carlos with an "8" on the door and some black stripes down the side, using the name "Jewnyeer" in conversation way too often, are proof that you don't want to halfass such work. I actually watched a guy in a black Monte Carlo who, as a part of his process for preparing for an autocross run, put bubble goggles on with his open face helmet, just so he could look more like Earnhardt. Ugh. Don't know exactly how this relates...

I would say any performace package would help, and what I'm really looking for is any dealership sold, added on, or ship out to have install but sold at the dealership like the ROUSH mustands sold today and then after that I would need some documentation, I'm thinking thats going to be the hard part.

I know Rapido was involved to some degree with enhanced XR4Tis sold as dealer enhanced, IIRC. There's still a few of those floating around. There will probably be one (maybe two) at Carlisle this year. They aren't easy to spot, but they include a Rapido intercooler (an earlier, smaller core?). A chat with Russ Harness would answer these questions in a hurry.brncapri wrote:I would say any performace package would help, and what I'm really looking for is any dealership sold, added on, or ship out to have install but sold at the dealership like the ROUSH mustands sold today and then after that I would need some documentation, I'm thinking thats going to be the hard part.
I know there were a few special XRs produced early on, including at least one that Jackie Stewart had his hand in, but I can't remember all the specifics. The information is out there, though.

No what I'm looking for are the performance parts that were installed at the time, because the stock XR4TI came with no pov/bypass valve I'm going to have some problems when i what to make a lot of boost ( SCCA rules say, the car had to have said parts stock to run them) Thats what I'm working with, now this is for the DSP class, not street mod, I don't want to leave any rock unturned.

the rapido cars were equipped with an intercooler, as well as some suspension mods and an exhaust, and that's about it.
they were rated at about 210hp. if you want to read more, go to www.merkurtech.com and read the magazine articles--there's a full road test of a rapido XR.

I downloaded a copy of the 2006 SCCA rule book because it sounded so odd that a car not equipped with an OEM intercooler couldn't add one. I ran DSP in 2000 (left the class after one season because of rule restrictions) but intercoolers were allowed then. The 2006 rulebook confirmed that intercoolers have to be OEM right in 15.10.C.3. Blech. The class has gotten even more restritive since I left it.
The Rapido IC comes with a (crappy) BPV. (Where did SCCA get the POV terminology?) BTW, water injection is allowed and would probably work well, at least logistically since you can frequently check water level, in the autocross environment.
I'm curious why you are choosing DSP over Street Modified. SM allows all the standard stuff XR owners like to do, like PE/big VAM, Gillis valves, camshafts, and intercoolers (in case you can't make the Rapido's dealer installed IC is OEM thing fly). Additonally, it also allows extra cool stuff like custom suspension members and subframes.

The car Roush had a hand in was the Exposure Merkur, which was written up in Car & Driver back in '86 and which I have cited on several threads here, notably the "Intercoolers-- All Info" thread. I think an attempt was made to market this, but I don't think it was very successful, or that many examples were sold. Rapido had a tweaked version of a PE ECA and a different lower intake, large VAM, Borla exhaust with their package. He was looking for a Saleen-like deal with L-M-M, but I think was also similarly frustrated.
This is my car, and these are my people!

Apparently I've been asleep at the wheel. Does anyone have a copy of this article?John Brennan wrote:The car Roush had a hand in was the Exposure Merkur, which was written up in Car & Driver back in '86 and which I have cited on several threads here, notably the "Intercoolers-- All Info" thread.

Damn you John, I just spent an hour reading all the articles, some of them for the first time!
It's actually the June '87 Automobile article on page 104, and I'm sure I had never read this one before.
Interesting to note that this car does have a direct link to the Bondurant cars I mentioned earlier, which Roush had apparently built (something I'd forgotten).
I quote.... "...within six months you'll be able to buy the car right off the showroom floor..."
And this... "If you've seen our spy photos, the 1988 Merkur will have a hood-mounted NACA duct to feed an intercooler in an underhood location anyway - even if it is the hottest spot imaginable."
Hope sprung eternal... <sigh>
