I have one that I'm going to start putting together soon in Clearwater. I plan on making it much like my miata. It will be 100% road legal and great for any driving event. I'm not sure If I'm willing to drift the Merkur as it is not nearly as replaceable as a Miata, but it will see track days at the FIRM, Sebring, PBIR, Homestead, probably some Georgia tracks, some autocross, and lots of rallycross. My miata is the fastest rear wheel drive rallycross car in the country, so the Merkur has some hefty shoes to fill.

Also, I build race cars and other go fast goodies. Currently I'm building a stage cage in an Impreza and setting it up for stage rally. Next up my be a Bro-light cage and maybe even a proper build of that. Hopefully there will be enough time to put at least a 6 point cage in the Merkur and get the suspension and brakes sorted out. I will probably wind up developing a multipurpose suspension for it with custom in house valved shocks. An engine swap of some sort run by Megasquirt is definitely in the not too distant future for it as well.

If you'd like to contact me for some services on your Merkur, call me at 7278086980.

Hey John, sounds like your Merkur is in good hands. If you have a minute and don't mind doing it, I'd love to see a couple of pix of that Miata (I've had a couple of NA's myself). :cheers

Nice, thanks! Looks like someone was having fun...

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Merkur for similar activities; if anything, with its suspension travel, balance, heft, and a bunch of other things easier to experience than define, it may be better. The platform makes for an excellent rally/rallycross weapon, as history has shown.

With about 200 supercharged wheel horsepower and fresh rally tires, sometimes driving sower is necessary so that you don't block your own line of sight with giant dust walls on turnarounds. I'm pretty sure the car can accelerate faster from 30-100mph in the dirt than most other cars can on pavement. It really is pretty fast.

I'm still down here in Sarasota, though the XR has been sitting for WAY TO F*@#ing long (ever since I got the Focus ST).

BTW @John Lambert, whatever happened to the Type-X'd Contour project? Always thought that would've been a great rallycross car.

That piece of crap was nearly finished when I decided that it wasn't worth pouring another dollar into it. It's sitting under a tree next to the Merkur. I got a Impreza coupe to work on as my AWD car.
