Might be possible to pull the big wire & fusabile link from the donor at the bone yard?

But if the gauge of wire in the Scorpio is adequete, just use it.

It's harder to adapt the three wire. 130 amps should be plenty. I think that is what the Explorers are running from the 3g unit.
Power has always been solid on my Sport trac. I think its original battery lasted 8 years (which was pretty amazing)
When I upgraded from a 2G to 3G in my F-150 indeed I grabbed the alternator wiring harness and the 3G from the donor 1995 F-150. This made the swap even easier as everything was exactly the correct length. When I upgraded the stock Bosch alternator to a 3G again I grabbed the harness and alternator from the donor Ranger. It was a little long for fitment in the XR, but too long is way better than too short.

So yes, I would certainly look at the harness from the donor Nissan, but if it didn't work for some reason, no biggie, I can come up with something. I doubt I'd re-use the wire in the Scorpio. It's 32 years old and deserves to be tossed.

I'll stick with the 2-wire and keep life simple.

FWIW - I found the very good specs for the aftermarket regulator/brush assembly for the Hitachi ...
http://estore.waiglobal.com/productdata ... 1463_0.pdf

It's a little pricey. I can only find it for sale from here...
https://www.aspwholesale.com/alternator ... 16611.html

I guess it explains why the re-manufactured units of this type are pricey.

I'll bet these brushes from the later 07-15 alternator will work in the earlier 04-07 units...
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Alternator-Bru ... ctupt=true

The only difference I see in the regulators between the two units is the connector (the later ones have the three pin connector).

Besides bearings, these are the only wear items you would need to replace on a used unit.

Fortunately the brush dimensions are provided so you can measure what is on the used unit and see if they are a match.
You may have to do a little soldering to install them.

14mmX6.5mmX4.5mm with 50mm Lead

Lot cheaper than having to buy a new regulator assembly.

The more research I do on this the closer I get to pulling the trigger....

If I'm to believe what's posted in an eBay ad, here's what is cross-referenced as using the same alternator:

Available for a broader range of years, and probably the same case sizing, is the 110A alternator from these applications. It is also 2-wire.

INFINITI G35 Coupe 03 - 08

Yeah, I think the models with the slanted grill openings are the 110 amp model. The 2004 Titan ones have the straight openings and are the 130 amp model. The 110 models are probably more plentiful. Let me see if I can find the dimension of the 110 unit..

Here we go. Looks like the mounting is similar. Hard to read but i think it is also 80.5mm between the lobes.

You will still need to figure out how to make it work the way it works in the Nissan/Infinity. Just like on my Civic, the computer controls the alternator. All kinds of people have problems after installing amps and such directly to the battery in these cars. The amps drain the battery while the ELD doesn't see any load other than the factory electrical stuff that goes across the ELD (and the stock 80 amp main fuse). You can read about the solution on sites like steve meade designs under ELD bypass. The 70amp alternator is small, but fine for even the ex trim 01-05 civics with power windows and sunroof. So any good 100+ amp alternator should be fine for a scorpio. The voltage is nice and high for a few minutes after starting the car, then it drops down low to get better gas mileage. If the battery is weak and voltage get's too low it comes back on again for a few minutes. If you turn on an electric accessory the voltage jumps up for a few seconds then goes back down. This is for fuel efficiency. I can't say if these alternators will burn out quickly if forced to run in max mode constantly. The Nissans are even more complicated. On the 370z there is an intelligent power distribution module. So instead of just high/low mode it is dynamic. If you install a very modern alternator you could possibly force it to have high or medium output with some fancy wiring. But will it burn out? Will your 150 amp alternator only put out 100 amps? If you find a simpler older Nissan alternator you may be ok. I think Reese may have the best solution and just go with a company that can build your old alternator to put out more amps. I've seen ready to go universal type units in 150-350 dollar range.

Fair point. But is that the case with this alternator in the Infiniti G35? I was thinking that on the 2-wire alternators they were NOT under computer control.

Went junkyarding the other day and found a 2004 Infinity G35 freshly dropped in the mud. Access from the bottom side wasn't an option - I left my scuba gear at home - so all I could come home with was this...

Perhaps removal from the top might be an option if the power steering pump was removed first, but I decided it was best to leave this until another <drier> day.

If it turns out that an older Nissan application might be a better solution, I did note that the 2000-era Pathfinder has a similar looking alternator and appears to be more easily removed.

Andy - I have verified that the two wire units are not the computer controlled type. See the discussions earlier in this thread and see the schematic. The two pin connector has just "Sense" and "Lamp". Other than that it is just a plain old internally regulated alternator.

The 2005 and later versions have the three pin connector that is under computer control.

Well then maybe you found a low cost solution. After I posted I thought about alternator testing at autozone. What do they do when someone brings them a newer honda or infinity/nissan alternator? I'm guessing they have all these different plug ins and just use the correct connector. Then their equipment sends the signals to make it work for testing. So you could do the same thing in the real world. The device on the honda sends a signal between 1 and 5 volts to the ecm, then that controls the alternator. You could measure these outputs on a running Nissan and make something to simulate this using some resistors. Might work.

Getting the pulley to work out is the main hurdle, we're trying to find a unit that is painless as possible in all other regards. Right now, in my mind, the best candidate is the 2004 Titan 130 amp alternator. The angle of it's brackets is same as the Bosch. The space between the front and rear brackets are within a few mm of the Bosch, and the steel insert on the rear bracket can be pressed so that the distance can be made the same.
Wiring is easy, on the 2 pin connector - run an additional SENSE line up to the BAT +, connect the existing Scorpio dash lamp wire to the LAMP connection. Might have to swap out existing main wire from the alternator stud to the battery + and replace with 4 gauge wire to handle the "new and improved" 130 amps.

That's my plan Bob. The mud I was slopping around in a few days ago was not far from your doorstep. I think perhaps they should rename the place "Harry's U-Swim-It".

I had my hands on one of these, cast aside from a junkyarded 2006 350Z. I would have brought it home, except for the fact that it had been smashed up a bit. As a consolation prize, I did grab another harness pigtail and can confirm that it is identical to the one from the G35, right down to the color of the 2 wires.

Eventually I'll come home with one. It's still on my list.
