A big ass screwdriver or medium size crow bar will do the trick.

No, you can use whatever you can find to pry open the carrier a touch to let the strut slide out.
Or beat them out with a hammer like I do.

I found this smallish ory bar worked really well for spreading the strut clamp. $4 at Harbor Freight.
