At least eliminate the pot as a potential problem- Caig Deoxit, adjust it back and forth
a few times, clean it your favorite way, etc. I revived more than one tach that way.

Same here. Two Scorpio tachs revived via potentiometer clean-ups.
You have to re-calibrate them though. Need to use a signal generator.
I always think about replacing the pot with a weather sealed type but
its a pain to get to it.

How about this for the signal generator? Eliminates the need for a multimeter.

I need to test and verify repairs to my XR4Ti tach. The one in my XR4Ti worked at one point in time after reflowing some solder joints, but a few years back it stopped working. I have another, but I'd rather test before going through the effort to swap it all out.

While on the subject of electrical test equipment for automotive and general use...
I have found one of these testers to be "super versatile"..
https://www.ebay.com/itm/TFT-LCD-GM328- ... 2789223663

You can get it as a kit or assembled.

It can identify and test a variety of components. It has basically three terminals but it doesn't care how you connect things up.
So if you test a transistor you just connect it any which way and it will figure out that it is PNP on NPN and will show it's beta value.
It will tell you if it is FET transistor. Naturally it will measure resistors and capacitors. Tests diodes.

It does a nice job evaluating the 30 year old electrolytic capacitors on the Scorpio electrics that have dried up.
I did this on my EATC and it was amazing how many caps were bad. You can see the ESR go up and the rating change on the bad ones.

If this were not enough, it also has a signal generator function and can also generate a variable PWM output.

I bought one of these as a kit a while ago and gutted the case of one of those free harbor freight multi-meters and put it inside.
They are so inexpensive now that I would just buy it assembled and be ready to go.

I use it almost more often than a multi-meter.
