SHO Engine Swap
HO 2.9L? Unless it was going to be the Cosworth, I don't see getting much more out of the 2.9L.
Which reminds me. You know what would be another good engine to put in the Scorpio?
That Yamaha engine they put in the early Taurus SHO.
This guy put one in an old Healey.
http://www.britishv8.org/Other/NormanRest.htm
Note how he did it...
"Borg-Warner T5 5-speed transmission (from a 1994 Mustang GT), mounted to an Aerostar bellhousing, subsequently mated to the engine via a milled 1/2"-thick aluminum adapter plate. (See below.) The pressure plate is stock "SHO". Mustang II (2.8L V6) clutch disc. Note: the original SHO design didn't utilize a pilot bearing due to its short transmission shaft, but as installed here additional support was required so a bronze pilot bushing from a small block Ford V8 was turned-down to fit the SHO crankshaft. Hydraulic throw-out bearing."

Re: SHO Engine Swap
If they'd kept selling Merkurs, that engine could have been everything for those cars. You know Ford was struggling to figure out what to do with that engine & didn't want to lose the investment. Merkur would have been the exact right home - a premium car at a premium price to offset the cost of the motor, plus RWD so no struggles with figuring out how to get that power to the wheels. Could have been really neat.brokencase wrote: ↑Mon Feb 24, 2020 6:56 pm HO 2.9L? Unless it was going to be the Cosworth, I don't see getting much more out of the 2.9L.

Although I'm not sure I would have bought a Scorpio SHO, and I will never regret my Taurus SHO experience.

Re: SHO Engine Swap
I don't know what the "H.O. 2.9" might have been - possibly just a bump up in compression and a slightly lumpier cam could have netted 160HP or so. Certainly bigger gains than that would have needed much bigger efforts such as those already discussed. One NOT discussed was the actual plan to put the Alfa Busso V6 in the Scorpio, had Ford's planned purchase of Alfa Romeo been consummated. That was scuttled just as soon as the Italian gov't jumped in and made sure Alfa went to Fiat rather than an American Co.
The Yamaha V6 has indeed already been installed in a couple XR's, so dropping into a Scorpio wouldn't be much different. But at this point, I'd rather opt for a lighter, more compact V6.

Re: SHO Engine Swap
I had a 164Q and a SHO right after each other... a 220hp quad cam six and a 230hp quad cam six. The Alfa's noise was WAY better than the Taurus's … but the variable volume intake manifold on the Yamaha made it a better performer IMO. Of course, the Alfa had the much better transmission, something that wouldn't have been a problem with RWD probably. Both cars were lots of fun!

Yep, I hear ya. The right thing in my logical mind says "EcoBoost 2.3L swap".DPDISXR4Ti wrote: ↑Tue Feb 25, 2020 4:43 pm The Yamaha V6 has indeed already been installed in a couple XR's, so dropping into a Scorpio wouldn't be much different. But despite the fact the SHO motor is dated, parts hard to find, etc... It has one thing going for it - It is a beautiful looking motor.
If I ever stumble across a used SHO motor on the cheap I would buy it in a heat beat.
Had no idea folks have done the SHO in XR4ti. Sure would like to see some pics. Particularly interested in how they did the exhaust.

Here's the only problem...Manual trans Aerostar bellhousing is unobtanium.

Re: SHO Engine Swap
There are so many SHOs in junkyards around here it would make sense there is just nothing interesting to do with those motors anymore. And, really, as cool as it was the 3.0l Duratec V6 ended up a probably better motor - Jaguar was getting 240hp from them - and even that's old news today. Sucks when there just isn't a good use for cool old tech.

Re: Stock Scorpio 5-speed?
As cool a motor as the SHO was (I had one), the 3.0 Duratec is SO much lighter-- a better motor for us, I think (my Mom had one in her Taurus). It was great in the Noble M12, and closer to home, some of us may remember David Godfrey's sweet turbocharged example.thesameguy wrote: ↑Wed Feb 26, 2020 12:59 pm There are so many SHOs in junkyards around here it would make sense there is just nothing interesting to do with those motors anymore. Re: SHO Engine Swap
Totally. I have always loved the Duratec V6 … well, sort of. I fell in love with the Contour SVT as it completed my "cool V6 collection." I know a lot of SVT owners eventually go to the 3.0l, but the 2.5l will always hold a spot in my heart. It was such a great sounding, great driving motor.

Re: SHO Engine Swap
I did a little research over on the SHO forums. The easiest way to put an SHO into a Scorpio is to send your A4LD to PATS transmission center and have them put all the bulletproof 4.0 parts into it. $2300 , Then you have them (or locate on your own) a Vulcan 3.0 A4LD bellhousing. Easier to find vs the earlier mentioned manual bellhousing
This greatly simplifies the drivetrain aspect of the swap. The hardest part is working out a flex plate.
The rest of it is then just the wiring. You need to get a very intact wiring harness and the relay module from the Taurus.
I have a PDF that has the EECIV wiring diagrams for the SHO.
Of course there is the motor mounts, accessories, and the exhaust to be worked out. But as far as swaps go it seems like it might be the easiest for the Scorpio.
There is a guy who did this with a 90s Mustang and he had some pictures, I'll see if I can link to them. One thing he warned about was that the heads overhang above the bellhousing. That could mean close clearance issues with the Scorpio firewall.

What good is an A4LD if you're trying to build a cool car?

Re: SHO Engine Swap
If you want a manual SHO conversion, there is a outfit that makes an adapter that gets you to a standard SBF pattern.
But then you have work out trans mount, clutch, and driveshaft.
Personally I don't prefer a manual in the Scorpio. But I would like more power.
