auto to manual swap

Post by mysticfireXR »

I have two scorpios... 88 auto and 89 5-speed. I am im the process of switching trannys. My question is whether i will have to switch computers due to the auto tranny? Is anything controlled by the computer in regards to it? I assume the manual tranny will be fine with an auto computer.

I noticed the way the trannys are wired is different. On the manual there was one plug up by the firewall, but on the auto the wire run inside under the radio. where do they lead? Are the harnesses for the wires the same?

thanks,

Nick

Nothing on the Scorpio tranny is controlled by the computer, so no need to hook it up. The only connection that will need to be in place on once you get the 5 spd in place is the VSS, which is a three-wire, barrel connection.

The other two connections are the converter lock-up and the kick-down solenoid. Those functions are engaged off a vacuum switch and a switch on the throttle cable respectively.

I assume you are using a t9 tranny correct?

Something else to note, on the auto Scorpios, there are two plates welded over the existing mount points for the rear X-member. You'll have to remove these to mount the T9. I think they are just spotted, so it shouldn't be too hard.

Yes, I just cut them off.. and the t-9 is in! I put in a new pilot bearing and wished everything else the best of luck. Everything was working fine in the '89 so all should be well. I still have a couple hours of work left though.

-Another question, the 88 has only 1 o2 senser in the y-pipe right in the y, but the 89 has that same hole plugged and one sensor in each pipe right after the manifold. Can i splice the two together? or just hook one up?

thanks

Well, its all together and runs and drives great. I got a little discouraged when it wouln'd hadrdly run after it was all together. It ended up being the ground strap to the transmission, apparently these cars are VERY sesitive to that.

So now that its all together i will be selling the donor car. It could be put together to make a running and driving scorpio or would make an excellent parts car (anyone need a good parts car?) I'm not sure if I am going to put back together with the auto at this point.

Actually there is a difference in the computers, but it will run fine with the A4LD computer. There is one other difference, the 89 5-speed has two O2 sensors one in each down pipe. Also the 5-speed is supposed to run on premium fuel, which I assume is the reason for the second sensor and different computer. On mine when we swapped bodies whe just used the standard computer and ran it on regular. Works fine that way.

Yes, i noticed the O2 sensor difference (see earlier post). I have been driving this week some and put 87 in it..seems to run fine. I just need to figure the tranny wiring harness. I know the vss is good and I swapped in a known good speedo and odo but they don't work in this car. I have a shop manual on CD, i just can't find the damn thing. Does anyone know which vss wires go to what?

Brown is ground, bk/bl goes to the fuse panel, y/br goes to the speedo.

THANKS

I still need to figure out the right side windows, though.
