Replacement Key

Post by Chris_12 » Tue May 16, 2017 3:30 pm

Well, my day got a little interesting. My exterior (both doors and hatch) key broke. I am assuming one of the keys is a replacement since the ignition key is different. Any ideas on what to do? Part of me says get a new key assuming its a factory key needed or just replace the locks (which I dont want to).

If that key opens both doors, take the passenger side lock out of the car.
Look at it and write down the TX**** number on it, go to a real locksmith.
Tell them the TX code and they'll cut you a new key.
Get a spare in case you lose or break that one.

Here's a pretty awesome key blank that will work:

Take it to the locksmith and get it cut, easy peasy

Nice. I think this would be a good spare for the 87 (not the one of issue right now).

well, shoot. looking at my lock, it is a replacement. There is no TX number. I guess I can take the lock and remain spare to a locksmith and hope they have a FC7 key.

I'm on business right now, but can sell you OEM replacement blanks for future if interested. Will likely be off grid until mid next week.

I have used FC7 FC8 and TR40 Toyota keys.
All work fine.

Which did you remove? Drivers side or passenger side?

Ok, now go read above...
Then, take out the passengers side door lock and read the TX code.
Go to locksmith and get a key made for that TX code.

May be a good idea since you already have the lock cylinder out of the Drivers side to take it with you and make sure the key you have cut to match the passenger side TX code works in the drivers side lock.
