bing a newbie to the XR, what do the brackets look like? Before long mine will need replacing, as the car sat under a tree, in a field for about 2 years.... sounds like something I could use, M8....merkurmaniac wrote:BMW seats from ..say a 2003 325 fit nicely. The gray doesn't match, but they are very comfortable and are much younger than any XR seats are going to be. Both driver and passenger are power capable, but the driver's seat that I bought have seat memory that wants to comunicate with a non existant computer.
I made up some stainless steel seat brackets that make adding the beemer seat, or others for that matter, fairly easy. BMW seats sit on two flat rails, unlike the basturd bracketry that hangs from the bottom of an XR seat.
I have a couple of extra sets of stainless steel seat brackets that I could (and planned on) part with.
I ground off two of the XR floor apurtenances in my car, then replaced them with the brackets.
The BMW seats are made by LEar and have power, heat, and explosive seat belt tensioners. Those are unused, right now, heh heh. The seat belt receivers are part of the bmw seats, so I needed the male end of the seat belt from a bmw. Turns out that they dont change much. I think I got a male seat belt piece from a late 80's 525 and it fit fine.
Nearly any seats will fit. Its just how much time you want to spend dicking with it to get them to work.
Oh..... and dont use power seats from a 4 door. (I can see nothing has changed here in the last 6 months.)

A couple seats I've recently seen retrofitted in other cars, chosen because they were claimed to be very comfortable yet supportive. Note, neither of these were fitted in a Merkur, so you'll need to figure out those details....
2006 - 2009 Mercedes CLK350
2004 - 2006 Pontiac GTO
I think these would be perfect for someone doing a street version of the Roush '88 GTO Championship car. They also come in red.
BTW, I grabbed both these pics off eBay. There's an add-on to do that for Firefox.

Re: Replacement seats
The need for seat brackets is due to the shape of the Merkur Floorpan. It's lsoped, and it has two stiffening "rails" that run east/west. The Merkur stock seats have a different adapter at each corner to adjust it to the height/shape of the mount it sits on. I re-used two of them, and made two new ones. Its easiest to speak in a coordinate system.
For the northeast and southeast brackets on the drivers side, I used the northwest and southwest brackets from the bottom of the passenger seat, since I was doing both fronts. They worked out o.k., heightwise. The driver's seat northwest and southwest were much more problematic. For the northwest corner, there is a sheet metal thing that is spot welded to the top of the rail. It extends a face of it vertically that is bolted, IIRC. I used a spot weld cutter and took it completely off. This is the spot where my seat bracket came in handy. It bolts thru the floorpan rail and provides a flat, strong mounting point for the seat. For the southwest driver's side, I beat a piece of heavy sheet metal and made a "c" shaped bracket. It was fairly simple to make.
For the tough spot, I had my metal fabricator build the bracket for me out of heavy stainless sheet which was then punched and spotwelded. I needed one, but had him make 9. Mike Oyler aquired them, as they had been in my garage for at least 5 years gathering dust.
When the work is finished, the end result is a flat, strong mounting surface that should be able to accept any regular seat that is expecting a flat mounting surface, as I would guess most of them are.

Re: Replacement seats
Those are slick looking seats. It looks like they fit well too. The pain in the neck is also the back seats, as they are probably about impossible to replace, so about the best one can do is find new fronts that look like a close match.
Were your seatbelts a pain ? They look like stocker XR pieces.

Re: Replacement seats
I'll list pics soon, I have nodded some Scorp seats to accept XR uppers maintaining the rear seat access. Best of both worlds.

Looks like the earlier C-class cars (starting in '99) have pretty much the same seats. Here's a set on an eBay auction with no bids at $99.DPDISXR4Ti wrote:A couple seats I've recently seen retrofitted in other cars, chosen because they were claimed to be very comfortable yet supportive. One minor issue is that the motor switches are remote, so you'd need to fab' something up for those.

Fully manual operation, so no wires to mess with.

Now you're talking. Less weight, no goofy electrical parts to break, quick and easy manual adjustment. I love power mirrors, windows, and door locks, but seats are a waste.DPDISXR4Ti wrote:2000 - 2006 Audi TT seats...

Audi TT seats gotta be scarce in JYs...they were scarce even on the road when new.

No doubt rare in the U-Pull-It yards. At Audi specialty yards like Shokan they are readily available. Obviously you'll need to pay accordingly.Ed Lijewski wrote:Audi TT seats gotta be scarce in JYs...they were scarce even on the road when new.

Re: Replacement seats
I just installed Porsche Boxster / Cayman seats in front. I removed the stock XR "feet" and adapted them to the Porsche rails. Not too difficult but a lot of drilling out rivets.
