Go out to the Pull-a-part and look at the rack on the 2 Xratties there. If the passenger side is all waffle patterned then its the ZF rack which has a nice ratio and gives about 2.6 or 2.7 turns lock to lock vs some of the TRW?Cam gears racks which are around 4 turns.

Hell you need a bunch of stiff anyway, so get out there.
Let us know what shape BOTH are in, i need a rack on one of my cars but don't want to drive up from by Sea-Tac airport just to find they're gone.

You may as well replace your outer TCA bushes, I have nice HD sort at a fraction of the cost of the polyurethane. They work fine and last for years.

When are you tearing into the thing?

Hey might have the pan (and maybe you need the "front seal holder"--seen those die when the pan gets smashed good, maybe the oil pick up too)

There are 2 pans in the 2300s in the mid 80s, gotta have the front and rear seal holders and the rear main to match the pan.

I've never seen one in a yard either.

If you do want one and can't find one, send a PM to blugg. He's got tons of parts and is a great guy to deal with.

Well I was told last month just before I left for China that there was one in the Arlington yard.
I have crossmembers, and core quality racks, but you should check the lower control arms or TCAs in Fordspeak, check the sway bar too.
Scorpio is the only other car with the same basic rack, just swap the "inner socket assemblies" for Xratty length ones (the tie RODS)
Check everything then give a call after the 15th when I'm cback.

How dead is the rack (as in can you return it as a core)? And which rack is it?

Close, but one more time for accuracy sake... There were 3 power steering racks used in the Merkur XR4Ti, as follows...

XR4Ti 1985
TRW ~2.75 turns
TRW ~3.50 turns

XR4Ti 1986 - 1989 -and- Scorpio 1987 - 1989
ZF ~2.6 turns

There is no way to visually differentiate between the 2.75 and 3.50 turn TRW racks - you have to turn them through their range of motion to determine what it is.

No such concern with the ZF, as they were all the same ratio.

There were no manual racks on ANY Merkurs.

There is no other rack - manual or power - that is shared with the Merkur from ANY other vehicle (except for the Ford Sierra/Scorpio/Granada of course, found throughout the rest of the world).

Perhaps we should dump this in the FAQ.

Don't let Ray know, you might end up with his 3.5 rack when your not looking.
