Tip for gutting Upper

Post by Garret »

Well I figured out a great way to gut my upper intake quickly and easily, I'll post pictures of the process when I get home, but the trick I found was to use my reciprecating saw with a nice 8 inch blade to hack out the middle section, saved me a lot of grinding :)

I've gutted two so far and found that cutting the bulk out is the fastest way to gut an upper.

Even working the rest down is very time consuming but way worth it if you are looking for some more top end.
After all the other bolt-ons of course

Tip for gutting Upper

After you get the center section out you can use a die grinder with an aluminum burr to flush it up. Yep you can get them with a 6" mandrel to.

I've been thinking of using a cutting torch, anyone try that yet?

Both the torch and the plasma cutter would be a bad idea. Plasma cutters only can cut so thick. I don't see anyone here with any kind of money to buy a plasma cutter that could cut all that out. With a torch. You may melt the upper. You have no real control with a torch cutting aluminum. The intake will absorb the heat really fast. Next thing you know is, oops you made a big hole. Its one thing to braze aluminum. Its a whole different story cutting it. Save your self alot of trouble. Get a rotary files like the ones I have. These will do the job. You can get them off evilbay for about $50 for all of them. Now the die grinders are a different story. The larger one is a balls to the wall. It has planetary gears to increase the torque output. That one costs more than most people want to spend on rims. The smaller one is a 25k rpm grinder. This will do most of the work you need to do. The real course rotary files will remove alot of stock fast. The ones next the course ones are call a single cut file. They remove a smaller amount of stock. The single cut files make it easier to do polish work. If working on aluminum, do not use a double or second cut rotary files. They will get clogged really fast. Then it is a pain in the a$$ to get it cleaned out. As a warning. Long rotary files do not want to be ran @ 20k rpm. You will hurt yourself, damage the file, damage the piece your working on, or all 3. Start slow. Then as you progress, you will have a feel for them. They also make shorter files also. Those can be ran alot faster.

I have access to a plasma, and hell where I used to live we had one in the house garage, not unobtainium, and you'd just use it to blow the chunks out by cutting them out or just melt your way down. You have TONS of control with a plasma.

i went at mine with a saws all and it worked like a charm. i would stay away from the torch/ cutter idea because the saws all method is just so easy.
