Problem starting, looking for suggestions

Post by smoke3006 »

Engine turns over fine, but the car doesn't fire until I step on the gas pedal.
This is an 85 with a PE and other changes.
I cleaned the IAC but that didn't help.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Does it stay running after it starts and your foot off the pedal?

If not, your throttle screw might just be backed out too far.

What voltage does your TPS read at closed throttle?
I think that's the best place to start.

POssible defective ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature) sensor signal to the ECU resulting in overly rich mixture? Leaky valve seals (oil leaks into the cylinders and temporariily fouls the plugs on start-up)?

YMMV 8)

you have an overview of how many ohms such a sensor will be?

Once it starts it runs ok, not great but ok.

I'll check the TPS.

Anyone thing I can use to clean the injectors safely?

Sam we can try and troubleshoot this later this week if you want -

Given the fact that your car is also down on power, and not making as much boost, it could be one of several things. We'll start with the easiest and cheapest first (vacuum) then go onto the rest (ECT, injectors, etc)

I dont think it's valve seals, ed - the car doesn't blow any oil smoke at all.
