You should be careful of reading the dipstick. Yours might not be accurate since it might have been replaced, or shorter than original for some reason. If you put in 5 quarts with a new filter, mark the level on your dipstick and call it normal. You might also compare your dipstick for length to a known good one. I know that mine reads a little low.

Richard is right.

It states 5 quarts in the manual, so dong it that way will be fine.

My dipstick would also read low at 5 quarts. I use conventional motor oil and always add half a quart of Marvel Mystery Oil at every oil change. Can't say that it helps but it doesn't hurt.

Early cars had incorrect levels indicated on the dipstick. There are directions put out by Rapido, and maybe via a TSB years back.

I typically change my own, so I know 5 is the limit, however; I had the local Ford garage change it once prior to a Carlise event and once I stopped them and asked how much they had put in they were at 6.5.......I said drain and start over!

Well I like this Idea and will do this on my next oil change. I don't need any more oil splashing around to rob Hp's.

Yup, the original 'electronic' stick in my 86 reads right at the low fill line with 5 qts. and a new filter.

Im getting this same issue on my 89. If it was a TSB for the earlier years, wouldnt they have fixed it on the 89? I used a Motorcraft filter from Walmart and 1 jug (5qts) of Mobil1 10w-30 Full synthetic. After sitting overnight, the oil level is well into the "add" portion of the dipstick.
Should I just stick with 5qts and mark the new level on the dipstick and call it a day?

As long as you are sure none leaked out and you didn't burn any, yes.

The jugs are normally 4 quarts, not 5. Check that first.

I noticed WalMart carries 5 quart jugs while Advance and AutoZone have 4 quart.
