15 psi in neutral?!
New boost gauge installed in factory spot..correct vacuum at idle and correct boost while driving..
Rev it up with the car in neutral and it hits 15psi on the gauge! This can't be normal..
Cam timing issue maybe? Or something else?

Cam timing is retarded. Check cam angle.

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
Cool thanks guys..
There should be a mark on the crank gear once I get the crank pulley off right? That should be at 12 o'clock?
Then obviously the cam needs to point at the center line..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
I asked because I don't have a front timing cover..
I know I won't be able to set ignition timing without it, but isn't it true I can still set the cam angle by removing the crank pulley and lining the gear on the crank up? I thought there was some marking that needs to be pointing at 12oclock..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
I'd get a front timing cover then. You're going to run into issues setting ignition timing which will change as soon as that belt comes off. Also, I'd trust a screw driver in cyl #1 before trying to align the keyway at 0*.DirtyMerk85 wrote:I asked because I don't have a front timing cover..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
It's the back cover that has the timing mark for the cam, Look at itDirtyMerk85 wrote:I asked because I don't have a front timing cover..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
Right I have the back cover so I know where the cam should be set, but I don't know where the crank should be set cuz I don't have the markings for tdc..
So I was going to set the key way on the crank to 0* by removing the crank pulley just so I can get it close for now..then get a front timing cover to set ignition timing after

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
Well if you have the back cover on then you should see and little cut in the bottom of the back cover, now you'll see a dimple on the crank pulley, thats the line up and yes the key way can be lined up but when you get the timing belt on this is you double check mark.DirtyMerk85 wrote:Right I have the back cover so I know where the cam should be set, but I don't know where the crank should be set cuz I don't have the markings for tdc..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
Sorry I can't, just can't get good clarity to make it worth while. Just put the key way straight up and make sure you don't move it.DirtyMerk85 wrote:DSPXR4ti wrote:Well if you have the back cover on then you should see and little cut in the bottom of the back cover, now you'll see a dimple on the crank pulley, thats the line up and yes the key way can be lined up but when you get the timing belt on this is you double check mark.DirtyMerk85 wrote:Right I have the back cover so I know where the cam should be set, but I don't know where the crank should be set cuz I don't have the markings for tdc..

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
Still doesn't address how to set ignition timing afterwards. Even if you get it back to where it was, I'm going to assume it was incorrect because your cam timing is so off. I'd wait and get a proper front cover before you guess where everything should be and have to re-do it later anyway.

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
You have to have some sort of crank timing marker to set timing; the rest is mechanical and can be done by sight alignment, aka the "string method."
Crank set at TDC (see above)
Cam timing mark inline with its own pulley nut, and the aux shaft pulley nut (about 5 o'clock)
Dizzy pointing to number one-- this will be fine-tuned with the crank marks and a timing light (SPOUT disconnected).
I did this with nothing but a DG crank pulley marker and a timing light for years. As I recall, someone else is also making a timing marker, reasonably priced, other than the DG type.

Re: 15 psi in neutral?!
behind the crank pulley is an arrow stamped into the crank. When that points straight up at the center of the cam bolt, the car is TDC. Sight that, make your own indicator reference; and then straight edge the center of cam bolt across the indicator on the cam gear to the center of the aux bolt. If you flip the aux pulley around, it will have the same arrow as the cam pulley. What i do is flip that, then have the two arrows face one another for a quick timing set.
