Is it possible to take off the TFI without a (special) tool?

Post by lucky87 »

Also, how can I tell if a tfi is bad?
the link on merkur encyclopedia seems to indicate it is for the 2.9 cologne engine. But i assume that they are the same(right?)

symptoms. I just brought it out of winter "storage" put in new fluids. (new to me radiator and fuel pump) turns out my fuel pump problem stemmed from some mismatched lines, i found that out 2 months ago :withstupid anyway, so i get fuel at the rail.
car was running for a bit while i was moving it out of the driveway.
then all the sudden it dies, I try to start it again and it only wants to run in the "start position after a couple tries.
If i leave it for about 15 minutes it runs for about ten seconds and then dies.
VAM is connected, vacuum lines appear to be ok.
Battery is new, but the idiot light keeps coming on. Charging issues were sorted out before the winter.
I was going to do an oil flush and change, but i could not get the car running long enough to use the oil flush

You have to have the tool...a regular socket has too large an outside diameter to fit. The good news is you can buy the tool at any auto parts store for about $5

Just ask for a Ford ignition tool.
SOME 5.5mm (I think...) sockets will fit.

5.5mm long socket that has been ground down a little bit to a narrower outside diameter works. I bought mine from autozone, IIRC, and after slightly grinding the outside, it fit like a glove.
