What next?

Post by thommi7 » Sun Jul 21, 2013 4:40 pm

Slow day at work and I'm bored, so I thought I would start a suggestion thread.

My replacement motor is mounted and I'm about to start bolting everything back on. I would like your opinion on what I should upgrade/convert first. I'm hoping to keep my next purchase at around 100.00, but might go up to 200.00 if my wife permits :P

So, here is what I will have once everything is bolted up and installed.

XSPOWER intercooler/radiator combo with SAAB twin fans and 3" piping
140 degree big ass upper intake (fits so that i dont have to relocate the alt)
ported lower e6
large vam/cone filter combo
PE computer
orange polly drive shaft coupling
3" down pipe
borla duel exaust
suspension/steering boots (forgot what they are called)
red coils that seems to be stock height

I plan on doing some ice racing, autox, and a little bit of drag-racing and maybe a little bit of weekend cruzing.

Steering was pretty tight and solid, but I'm not an expert.

Bushings looks old and worn, but no visible issues

Suspension felt good after i replaced the missing rear strut bolt. Again, I'm a novice at this.

Brakes are pretty squishy after being bled (took a good 10 rounds per corner).

Not wanting much more then 250 hp. I'll want to make it pretty before I go for more :P

So, I guess balanced is a good way of putting what I'm looking for.

Thanks!!!!

I would definitely like better brakes. It was my understanding the the stock XR's were just squishy because of the design, not because they needed fixing. Am I wrong?

What part of the brake system should I start with? I was thinking of getting some upgraded brake lines.

Thanks,
Mike

Brakes shouldn't be squishy, especially with stock rear drums. Did the master ever go dry?

How are you bleeding the system-what are you using?

YMMV ;-)

My friend worked the bleeder screws while I pumped the brakes.

poly bushings will make a huge difference.
also sell the PE computer for the ridiculous price people pay for them and buy a megasquirt or similar.

limited slip rear. This will make the biggest difference for getting out of the corners and off the line faster. This is the biggest item on our wish list.

I've found with a stripped/lightened interior the stock brakes with a good set of high performance pads can give some pretty respectable performance. We got 1200 race miles out of some good parts store rotors and a set of EBC pads and still going. Admittedly, we aren't chasing ultimate lap time during an endurance race.

Hi guys. I'm not sure what year your car is, but another nice little mod I did to my 86' was to swap to the larger diameter master and booster. it firmed the pedal up nicely. I picked up the parts from Mike at Merkur Depot.

How about a manual boost control valve? Have one of those installed yet?

I love you Merkur guys. So much more helpful than the guys off on the Mazda forms.

I think I'll get the bushing. Great advise everyone.

Any tips on testing the brakes? this is my first project car B-)
