Fuel Gauge does not work

Post by lorencherylp »

While I am on the subject of things not working on my 39000 mi 89 Merk, the fuel gauge does not work. Any ideas on that? Typical or not typical? Thanks again.

Typical, it's cold solder joints in the back of the mechanism on the board.

Does it read full or empty or cycle between the two extremes? If yes then it's a fairly easy fix. Remove the "anti-slosh board" on the back of the cluster and you will most likely have a working gauge.

Mine reads empty constantly also, but randomly maybe once a month it will read down to 3/4 full...needle creeps up then fades down or won't recover after I stop and restart the car. It has been that way the 17 years I've owned it. Early on, I checked wires, looked for faults, changed dash clusters but did not find out the problem until I had to replace the in-tank pump. Looking at the traces on the in-tank sender, one could see the wear on the copper.

Does anyone have a replacement, know an alternative unit, or know where they might be available?

At my advanced age :) I have never taken apart a dash. This looks easy to do once you get to it
Thank you for the instructional vid!

well, I could probably do a video for removing the cluster, but when I got my car the cluster was already in the passenger seat, so I don't know how the factory trim is set up. let me see what I can do, it can't be very complicated. And yes, I always stress the "don't break sh*$" rule.

X2, you don't need to remove the whole dash just the cluster. :cheers

Ok, I did a short video for removing the cluster. I'll post a thread in the projects/ video forum too, I'm going to get another one up for tach repair, I fixed mine last night and i have had requests for that too. Any input is always welcome. Thanks guys- Tom
