wastegate or timing
wastegate or timing
car is overboosting again! it was running way hot and overboosting like crazy previously to me putting on the timing belt. after belt and set timing it was running pretty good but boost was a little hi 17-20. today i put on a re-pinned la3 and 3in exhaust big vam almost immediately it overboosted again setting off the buzzer. i thought maybe the wastegate arm lost the clip checked no clip but arm was still on put a clip in same thing. pulled the wastegate line and blew threw it literally. checked my pile of wastegates found one i couldnt blow through i know that doesnt tell me if its a good wastegate but was the best in my scrap pile put it on now it runs rougher and still overboosts. i dont know if timing jumped or wastegate is bad maybe both. any advice helps thanks in advance

Re: wastegate or timing
If the wastegate clip (on the exhaust) falls off, you wont build any boost. The wastegate actuator might be, as you said, shot - however, given that the car was only making 17psi before - are you running an aftermarket boost controller?
You might have another faulty WGA - if you have an aircompressor, set output to 10-11 psi, then blow thru the feed line via a reducer and see if the arm moves. Hell, it might even be binding. Does the flap door swing freely?

Re: wastegate or timing
If you can't blow through the wga, then it's OK, usually. What are you using to control the boost? A Gillis valve?
You can check the timing again but I doubt that's the problem. Here's a writeup:

Thanks everyone the door swings freely. I followed that link when I replaced the timing belt. Yes gillis valve is what I'm using tried two other mbc also. Anyone using the blue merkurdepot Watergate ? How do they like it? Ill try the aicompressor regulator and see what happens. But I should probably break down & buy a Wastegate anyway if it doesn't fix it at least it'll look good

Re: wastegate or timing
Update running perfect now down to a conservative 10lbs of boost (no intercooler) routed Gillis off vac tee. My airplane mechanic friend gave me some wastegate oil threw a few drops in after a hr or so started it drove it problem fixed. wga must of been stuck or the oil helped seal it either way another merkur is back on the road

Re: wastegate or timing
You changed the way the WGA line was routed? Is that what fixed it? Sounds like it to me.routed Gillis off vac tee.

Re: wastegate or timing
Yes I rerouted it. Vac tee to Gillis instead of turbo housing to gillis the line off the wga was left alone. That seemed to fix it keep in mind I threw some oil in the wga might of helped its working good but only time will tell how long it'll last.
