Merkur Paint Question

Post by yodagirl49 »

Sad to say I should know this but I don't . 89 Radiant Red who was the OEM paint supplier when the vehicle was produced?
It's not base/clear it's single stage I'm trying to find out who's material was sprayed on at the factory.

Thanks

Sikkens was the OE supplier.

No way - radiant red, black and white were all "single stage to color". I've painted 2 '88's and 2 '89's. One '88 was black, one the "early" red and 2 radiant red '89's. They were all single stage and all were original when I did them. Some are against ppg due to expense, but the color match has always been right on and the DCC single stage holds up great. My cars have had years of use after paint - parked outside, winter driven - paint has never failed (but it does fade and requires a rub after some years). While all the jobs were complete with all trim removed, I did cut in a few times to repair damage and the ppg match was still right on.
Current price on radiant is probably ~$300 a gallon at least. With all the cladding you need a lot of paint. An XR is a HORRIBLE car to paint - I'll never, ever do another. I could paint our 928 twice in the time it takes to do an XR - AND a 928 is a pig to paint also!
I'm sure other paints are good also, but ppg is a known, long term product. Many hobby web-sites talk up paint brands with many secret sales posts advocating certain brands and many cheap skates claiming great savings on some primers, etc. I can see the point as paint is very expensive. An XR is a cheap car, so trying to save money might be a wise idea.

Pffffff, yeah, that's the sound it makes! It just so happens that they make a "Garnet" paint which is a really great match for my original Burgundy color... great for spot repairs, or for trim pieces, etc.
