XR suspension - struts, shocks, springs.

Post by my8950 »

So I was looking at MC2 for suspension parts, mainly struts, shocks and probably springs as well.
While I don’t have such an issue to pay about $250 for a new set of stock type springs, it looks like Koni yellow or Bilstein are the struts to choose from. I do have a tough time to justify paying out about $600 for struts and shocks.
Anyone have any other suggestion for a daily driver? I don’t need the best of the best everything, but my guess is that the original stuff on my 88 is worn out.

For a daily driver with no pretensions, KYB front and rear are economical, and work 'pretty damn good"..

Springs can be stock if not rusted to hell or maybe 10-15% stiffer. Good, cheap and easy..
The next thing worth having is around $2000

Unless they are damaged, use your stock springs on KYB shocks and struts.

Ive got a buddy selling rear KYB shocks. Probably 1k miles on them. Perfect for daily driver and stock replacement. Let me know if you want them.

Going cheap, yes KYBs are definitely better than stock replacement. In my opinion, running KYBs all around with a set of 200lb/in stock ride height springs and stock rear springs is a very fun suspension. It's good on the street and even good on the road courses. Now, running Bilstein Sprints on all four corners with the 200 front/stock rear springs is positively sublime, but as you noted it's a lot more expensive. I think this is the ultimate street setup to be honest. I run custom-valved Bilstein coilover struts and non-coilover shocks with Hyperco springs on all four corners of my car, and while the car absolutely RIPS in the corners, I would absolutely use non-custom valved Sprints with 200s if it were a street car.

KYB currently has a rebate, $40 off 4, until April 30th, "Qualifying products: KYB Excel-G, GR-2, Gas-a-Just..." Which means it includes the XRs struts and shocks. You have to send in the receipt and UPC codes. One caveat... it has to be "one receipt". I was only able to find a complete set on Amazon. Rock Auto was 1 short.

Front: 234026 Excel-G OE Replacement Strut
Rear: KG4545 Gas-a-Just Monotube Shock

Ok, thanks for sending that. Although seems like they give a good deal, and an impossible mission.
I mentioned springs in my original post as well based on what I read from the MC2 page.
My 89 that is no longer with us had the rear coil break, and that was maybe 8 yrs ago.
So I think its safe to say the original springs have seen better days.
