crank shafts pulley removal and carbon canister

Post by intimidatorj »

Okay, guys I'm in the process of tearing the top end of the motor down as we speak and having problems getting the crank shafts pulley off first I can't get the bolt out with just elbow grease going to try and impact in the next few days and also what pullers have you guys used to pull it off???? And has anyone ever just left out the carbon canister if so pros and cons ? Will everything still work properly

Use a breaker bar on the crank pulley, jammed into the ground and kick over the ignition a few times with the fuel pump fuse removed.

Also, you don't need a puller to get the pulley off. Mine hadn't been off in 30 years and just giving a few friendly whacks with a dead blow hammer knocked it off.

X2 on that, also if I remember correct, the bolt is left thread, so it will get lose in the direction where a normal (right thread)bolt will tight. :cheers

It is a normal thread, not left handed thread. Lefty loosy, righty tighty.

There does exist a Rotunda tool specifically designed to remove the crank pulley. It works very well for a stubbornly seized pulley.

Yes, with no ill effects. Left the line in place.

If an interference issue is your reason for removal (intercooler piping?), and you would feel better keeping it, you could always relocate it to the back of the car with a small air filter.

Capping the lines will result in pressure building in the tank, and deleting the canister and connecting the evap line straight to the intake can result in gas vapors accumulating in the engine bay or moisture making its way into the tank. It's really not advisable to remove it.

You can do it that way or just apply a generous amount of heat to the bolt and then use your impact. Should come right off.

Heat on that bolt will make it expand...and more difficult to remove.

The heat will also help loosen any crud or loctite.
The trick is to heat it, let it cool then hit it with the impact.
