removal of pinion from steering rack

Post by lesmracer »

I am using a Ford Sierra steering rack in my Ferrari 330 P4 clone. I am changing the rack from 4.3 turns lock to lock to 2.7 turns. However, I cannot remove the pinion from the rack. can anyone tell me how to do this?

Remove the metal cap and nut from the bottom and the snap ring from the top,
gently tap it out from the side the nut was on, brass drift works well. Just be careful not to damage the threads.

Thanks for the info. I should mention that the rack is a manual. I posted here because this was the Merkur forum topic most similar to my problem.
The pictures in the link are very different from what I have. I presume it is because of the power steering. re NiggyMerk post, your description seems to describe what I have. I do have a small metal cap ~ 3/8" diameter on the bottom of the rack. I have tried to remove it. I assume there is a nut below that. Also, there is not a snap ring on the top side. there is a large circular metal piece (I do not know what to call it) with 4 long slots in it. It appears to screw out but has been peened in two places to prevent it from screwing out. There is a hard rubber seal around the pinion that is attached to the circular piece of metal.

I want to post a picture to show what I am talking about but do not know how.

You have to upload the photos to an online photo place like photobucket or flickr or something of the sort. Then use the IMG and copy it in your post.

I was describing a power rack.
You will just need to unstake that large slotted nut and just turn it out,
there may be another nut underneath which sets the preload.
Probably similar to this picture.

Nick, You are great. The drawing is very helpful. There are some differences. see attached photos. The main one is the slotted nut on the top and side in the drawing is very different from what I have. Mine has 4 slots about 3/4" long that circle the pinion. Any idea what the proload should be?

I still cannot figure how to upload a photo. I have created a photo bucket account and uploaded 3 pictures. I know I am supposed to use IMG but how. The URLs are provided below so you can see the photos.

In the library view, you select the individual picture options on the top left of the picture. Select "share", then the bottom one is the IMG. Click on that and it'll copy it automatically.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and especially to Nick for sharing the exploded drawing of a similar rack assembly. While the rack assembly was somewhat different from mine, it was close enough. That really helped me. I have successfully removed the old pinion and rack and installed the new pinion and rack. With that completed, I will now learn how to post pictures.
