Rebuilt 2.3t engine noise no idea where/what
Video: https://youtu.be/G8JXoXrSA1w
Hey all I got my engine rebuilt with a lot of changes done. Of note in the video is the ticking from the head... assuming that is from the stiffer springs I got from bo-port acting on the lifters... can I make that go away or is that just going to stay that way? This engine has about 1500k on it now.
So my big issue is that squeeking sound. That is new as of 100k ago... wtf is it? I can't pin point. Is that a pully going bad?
Thanks.

Re: Rebuilt 2.3t engine noise no idea where/what
So did some more investigating and when I pull the number one plug wire that squeeking goes away... does that mean I'm dealing with a rod bearing etc or is there a possibility of something less terrible?

A "mechanic's ear" stethoscope (Harbor Freight ...) would be helpful to use.

Re: Rebuilt 2.3t engine noise no idea where/what
So nothing has really changed. Number 4 still hasn't seated (lower compression) and number one is still slapping but what I did do is take stuff apart.
First pic is number four which looks good:

And second is number one which also looks good:

Is there anything I can determine from this? Should I just rip the block out or try something else?

If anyone is interested in where this ends up/is currently, head on over to turboford at the below links. Getting some details there plus all the pics from the tear down are there.

Man, I just read you thread on TF. Crazy. Did you decide what your approach is gonna be to fix the engine?

Yah, source a new block and get 4 new pistons and bearings etc . Sucks.
Least the after market rods are still good!!

Re: Rebuilt 2.3t engine noise no idea where/what
Was the Piston to cylinder wall clearance the issue? I know a lot of forged pistons don't swell as much at lower temps. Most won't expand enough to not slap until they get hot enough under boost. Built a few EJ205 and EJ257 and my machinist and I had discussions about clearance preferences. I prefer slightly tighter tolerances for a few reasons. 1 is just noise. I like my engines quiet. I try to get pistons that have a lower thermal expansion rate than some out there which expand like foam in a spray can (*Mahle*.........*cough*....*cough*) I also think that after the break in (which also takes longer) I have had pretty good luck with tighter engines lasting a touch longer. Either way it's nice to see you getting passed the set back. That had to be aggrevating-

Re: Rebuilt 2.3t engine noise no idea where/what
You are exactly correct man. The issue was with the diff alloy piston and the slightly larger cylinder wall clearance. The clearance was fine with stock pistons but not with these CP ones.Black-Out wrote: ↑Tue Jan 23, 2018 11:58 pm Was the Piston to cylinder wall clearance the issue? Lesson learned. Still need to source a new block and try and get one 30 over cp piston or just cut my losses and do a stock bottom end.
