Finally getting rid of those nasty, rusty relics, .. drum br
My Merk sat outside for two years, awaiting its temple. Now its complete, and when I went to drive the car into the garage (after Mike Oyler helped me get a key made) the rear drums had seized up on me. I had to really drag race launch my car to break the friction loose in the rear, and it sounded like I was dragging an anchor behind as I pulled it into the garage.... Oh my ghod, how I hate those drums.
I chiseled the drum loose on the passenger side tonight, and used a pulled to successfully remove the flange and the bearing carrier. I have some 10 year old, NIB, David Godfrey rear caliper adapters. I know that when the brackets were made, T-coupe rear calipers, were the plan. Brad Anesi had worked towards some Lincoln LS/Jaguar aluminum calipers, after that, and I have several sets of T-coupe and LS calipers. I think that they went with Focus SVT rotors, or something like that. I should have the right calipers and the right rotors, but I'd like to know, what is the state of the art, as I see Brad is messing around with some VW calipers. ??? Did the LS calipers not work out for some reason ? Were you just bored with the status quo, and needed a new quest ??
Also, what are people doing for parking brake cables with the LS Setup ? I am really hoping that the LS calipers fit Godfrey's brackets, as that was my plan and I guess that I'll find out soon. Its just been a long time since I accumulated those parts.

Excellent. Carry 'em with you to Carlisle next June.
(They make good safety blocks to rest the body on for when you lose the next caliper bolt on the road...this one from an untorqued rear bolt...).

that was actually pretty damn funny, ed.
I live about a half mile from the Brazos river, and if it wasn't for our levy, we would have had about 3 feet in my house. High and dry again for us. My merk had about 5" in The rear footwell and spare tire well, tho. I think bad sunroof seals.

I should have been more specific it's the rear passenger footwell and the trunk I had to put some buckets in the car to catch the rain dripping from the roof

The rear brake conversion is probably the best upgrade that I've done to my XR, did it maybe 20 years ago with a kit that I purchased from BAT that was sourced from SSB. I believe that they are the T-bird calipers inverted ( ie r on left ) also needed banjo fittings to add a higher bleeder, all was in the kit. Was able to use the stock parking brake cable. Deleted the proportioning valve.
Before the car always felt like it was stopping on it nose, after stops nice a level.
Recently upgraded the fronts to PBRs with Contour rotors.

Jim, thanks for the info, this is promising for me then. Once I get my new/er XR up and running I may go this route instead of replacing the shoes for the rear.
You completely bypassed the prop valve, did you ad an adjustable, or leave it straight through?
Curious about the PBR's and contour rotors also for the front, that requires different brackets and a bunch of other stuff as well, right?

Just bypassed the proportioning valve haven't felt any adverse effect.
For info regarding the PBR upgrade Find the David Godfrey brackets on the MC2racing site, mc2racing.com there is a link to Davids instructions and parts list. I used the Powerstop calipers, slotted rotors and pads from RA.

I guess I'm late to this thread - sorry Richard...
The Lincoln LS calipers were on the white car; the Passat calipers/SVT rotors on the Brat. I guess I mostly went with the Passat calipers because I'm using Scorpio bearings which have the mounting ears built in, so no adapter needed (just a simple spacer). Also, the bleeder is perfectly located and the Sierra rear disc e-brake cable works perfectly.
I would go with the Passat calipers on a XR even if I had to fabricate an adapter. Everything just worked out better with them.

I'm guessing I don't have to have stainless brake lines for the rear, correct?
I can just use some brake tubing and bend new lines to fit....
