odd question

Post by abomb1982 » Sat Apr 15, 2017 10:36 pm

There is a black box on the passenger side frame rail in the engine compartment. just under-ish the air box. It has a plastic line that runs all the way back to I think the gas tank or at least thats where I lose it and a hose running to the air box. I can get a pic but don't have it now and thought maybe someone would jus know....... What is it? I would like to delete it

I think you are talking about the charcol canister.

maybe I should re phrase my question. Is there a proper way to delete it or can you just pull it and cut the line?

Maybe you should leave it there to prevent gasoline vapors from getting into the air we have to breathe. There is absolutely nothing to be gained from removing it.

Weight loss. It has to weigh at least half a pound.....

True, and tbh I had not actually considered that. I use only three lug nuts per wheel to cut weight, but maybe dumping the canister would have been a better approach. Food for thought. Thanks!

It can be removed. It just means the fumes from the gas tank are released into atmosphere instead of recirculating back into the intake. If you smog the car, they will look for that so keep it handy for then.

I think every XR and others I've owned usually have the hose to the canister cut/torn/missing before I even get the chance to look.
The XR hose is made from paper towel roll, not sure what the thought process was behind that as far as holding up to the elements.

So....replace with a new one. (BTW, that kind of hose was used on most if not all cars made earlier (not a unique fitment to XRs).

I have mine just dumping into the frame rail.

If you remove it, DO NOT CAP THE LINE. It must be allowed to breathe.
