Anyone know of reasons why/why not to use major brands e.g., Prestone, etc?

Everything that I've read is less about brand and more about "Use the green stuff."

It's more important to ensure regular changes, than whatever you decide to put in it, IMHO.
Next to brake fluid, it's the most neglected fluid I see after 40+ years of working on motor vehicles.

How often, keeping in mind that the car is driven about 1K miles a year?

I can't remember the capacity of the factory XR setup, (anyone??) but generally, for the minimal investment in fluids, I try to remember to change mine every 2 years.
Brake fluid goes every year.
