Suspension: MC2 v Rapido
The XR4 needs suspension work in a bad way. Anybody have some BTDT with these two suppliers? MC2 offers the upgrade springs at stock height and inexplicably softer springs for lowering. I don't understand that idea at all, but stock height is pretty good to me.
What is your opinion on the complete Rapido package including sway bars? Are the sway bars worth it?

Rapido/BAT/Eibach springs are going to be too soft IMO. They are just lowering springs with at most a 10% increase in stiffness. You'll want the height adjustable setup and the ease/freedom to change spring rates since you're going to be swapping motors and want to dial it in perfectly.
To make it a fun street car, look for a 16mm rear bar to help balance the XR's natural tendency to understeer at the limits. Don't worry about the front sway for now although I will suggest nearly every poly bushing Powerflex offers for this car.

Totally agreed. The '88 I have has Eibach springs on it and it's a bit of a joke. The stock suspension was typical period German, and the slight increase that Eibach et al might offer isn't enough to make it feel modern. I have MC2s street/track and it's really too much for the street... I suspect their straight street setup would be a good choice for a sporty daily driver. If not, you can certainly customize the crap outta the spring rates.Esteban wrote: ↑Mon Nov 27, 2017 5:43 pm Rapido/BAT/Eibach springs are going to be too soft IMO. You dont even need to run Bilsteins or Konis to make a coilover setup. You can even convert KYB GR2's into a coilover as long as the spring rate you run doesnt exceed it's limits

I have a lot of experience with GR2s from my last job building FIAT X1/9s. They impose too much of a limitation for coil overs, I think. We couldn't put more than a 200lb spring on them.

Re: Suspension: MC2 v Rapido
In that same job building X1/9s, I made some useful contacts for coilover parts, machining, and Koni struts. Rolling my own ground-up coilover conversion is a consideration. The Merkur housings wouldn't be very demanding in terms of housing design. What is inside the strut isn't so expensive; paying the strut manufacturer (Koni, Bilstein, etc.) to make their strut fit directly to your car is what makes them expensive.

Right. Just saying that you arent limited to the expensive stuff if you were thinking coilover conversion. If you want the ride height adjustability without the stiff spring rate, this is a budget option.Longitudinal wrote: ↑Thu Nov 30, 2017 5:32 pm I have a lot of experience with GR2s from my last job building FIAT X1/9s. You will not disappointed in ride quality with 350-400 rate front springs.
