Off the top of your head

Post by abomb1982 »

I am doing the T5 swap and Im using the adapter for the drive shaft that would fit the mid to late 80s two piece drive shaft. A new 1994 GT mustang drive shaft has just been offered to me and I was wondering if it will work. Anyone on here know if it will :D

Adapter for a 2 piece drivershaft?? Did you mean to say the adapter for the 1 piece Mustang driveshaft?

Here's an interchange for the 1 piece drivehsaft that might help:
1979-1995 5.0L Mustang's with T-5/SROD/C-4/A0D Transmission, 1979-1993 5.0L's with Tremec Transmissions, 1994-2004 3.8/3.9L V6 Mustangs with a T-5 Transmission.

That's a direct swap?

No, that's the 1-piece that requires the 460 machine shop adapter.

The adapter is what makes it bolt-in. That's what adapters do. Make stuff that doesn't fit bolt in.

just for some closer, I was confused on the drive shaft I could buy. It is a custom two piece DS for the xr. While trying to figure this all out i did read in a couple places that the one piece is prone to vibrate. I think I ll just get the custom shaft. Thanks for the help guys and sorry for the confusion.

I haven't had any problems with the 1-piece, but it is the FMS aluminum one and I aligned it during installation. I have definitely read about problems though, and it's absolutely possible I am just lucky. :) I think I would do it the same again, unless someone makes an affordable 2-piece aluminum one. The weight savings is worthwhile to me.

I agree that the weight savings is ridiculous comparing the stock Mustang to the aluminum one on the 87-93 cars.
A while back I read about the aluminum d/s hitting the e-brake components on the XR, did you have to do anything to fix that? The diameter of the stock vs aluminum Mustang d/s is quite a bit...Vibration issue is possible if it is not balanced, but you won't experience that unless you try it, and even then it can still be addressed.

IIRC I did have to clearance the brackets a bit.

Nothing a Dremel couldn't handle!

(That is obviously the before picture ;) )

Man that was a long time ago... I still had two fuel pumps!
