Re: Battery dead, hood won't open - I'M STUCK
Guys, thanks for the pics and guidance! Using my Weber grill grate tool (18" long with 90 degree bend at tip) was able to painfully snake my arm up the left side and just reach the sweet spot - hood has released! Re-attached cable, zip tied, and added a long wire to hang down as an extra release just in case. Thanks again!

In all fairness to the car (which was almost 33 years old at the time) I don't think I would have had any problem if I noticed and repaired the little plastic thing at the end of the cable. Not sure if those are even available, maybe someone can start 3D printing these. Good to hear you can once again drive the XR!
The best way to keep your Kia from being stolen is to not have a Kia.

I replaced the plastic piece with a plastic drywall anchor, good quality type with the flanged head. I cut I slit down the side with a hacksaw, and drilled a hole down center same diameter as the cable. Slid it onto the cable and pressed it into the lever hole.
Worked great, and tightened up the bit of slack in the cable.
