First "Major" Repair/Question on Hoses

Post by Varthlokkur » Tue Jul 12, 2005 7:08 am

I've gone seven months without any repair issues. Well, the first struck last night. I pull into the driveway and I let the car idle for a minute or so. The, I see smoke creeping out from under the hood.

Dang! My first thought is a blocked cat causing the manifold overheat and light something under the hood on fire. Or, maybe a fuel leak. Or...Bleah, not much happy thoughts.

I shut her down and saw no flames. Cracked the hood and a whoosh of steam comes out. Just a cracked coolant hose. :D What a relief!

All I can say is...MAN! You guys sure have got me jumpy! :P

Better get used to those hoses blowing!! They don't last long at all in that inferno around the turbo. Mine blows a hose like every couple months!

There so many coolant hoses under there it's not wonder there are leaks.

7 months that's like some kind of a record.

That shouldn't be happening, unless you have a bunch of old hoses you are replacing one by one, using inferior hoses, or have some other cooling system or engine running temp issue(s). I understand the first, since hoses cost money, but remember that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link, and most definitely use high-temp, high-silicone hoses, especially right near the turbo.

I'm investigating just changing all my hoses to silicon, since it looks like I should just replace them now and get it over with.

My question is, during my search for silicon, I saw one site that sold ties as a way to clamp down hose. Now, I don't think I would ever do that, but is it valid?

Cable ties. I think those are just to tie them up out of the way. Those would never be used for clamping.

As long as the nipple has a shoulder for the hose to go over, the ties will work fine. On a straight nipple, use a clamp.

Dude, that is vacuum hose! You can use zip-ties on those, although typically it's not needed if the hose is sized correctly.

But don't use that hose nor zip-ties for coolant applications!!!
