Post by Depeche » Fri Oct 28, 2005 12:33 pm

I was scraping the ice off my windows this morning and noticed my passenger side mirror was steaming, i put my hand up on it and it was warm!

Yeah, I think it was standard equipment. At least on my 88 and 86. They should heat up when you have the rear window defroster on. It's all the same circuit. A lot of times the heating grid burns out though. Also, if you take the mirror glass out, you can see the two wires connected to it. Sometimes, one of the connectors comes off -- and no heat then. Check for corrosion too.

is the grid in the glass? i have to replace the glass (small cracks) there are some around on ebay and such, but i won't buy them if they will make me lose the heat.

thats awesome, btw. This car was way ahead of its time.

Yeah, the grid is in the backing of the glass. If you buy the stick-on glass -- no heat for you. But, there are lots of complete mirrors on ebay usually. I haven't looked for any in a while, though. Also, check the Merkur Desktop market section. Or just ask people on here. I once needed a whole D/S mirror, and got a pair for less than $30, I think.

Yeah, these cars kick ass. The Scorpio, too -- Power Reclining Rear Seats!! You only see that on top-of-the-line Benzes and BMWs now. Scorps had it standard in 88-89. And for a third of the cost.

Kinda difficult to prove that he actually knew that when other folks said the same thing in posts above his. Then again, we've actually seen that AlexD rarely reads posts, just sort of replies randomly.

No. There seems to be a substanitial correlation between where a car was sold and whether it had heated seats or not. Southern cars tend to not have them and northern cars tend to have them. I know I'm enjoying the heck out of mine these days. (The driver's side heater was broken for the first 4 winters I owned the car, and now they are fixed. Mmmm.)

I've not seen a ryme or reason on the heated seat issue. Here is a breakdown of where my cars were purchased orginally and what they had.

87 CA Cloth - heated.
88 CA Leather - heated.
89 CA Leather - not heated.
89 OR Cloth - not heated.

You would think the Oregon car would have heated seats!

I have the original window sticker on that car. Under "Optional Equipment" it's blank. I'm sure the heated seats would've been an extra charge.

Under optiions included at no extra charge "Duel Power Heated Mirrors"

My '85 competition shell from California has non-heated cloth seats. :)

And my '85 Competition Shell from California has heated leather seats. Now that I live here, I'll have to get that driver's side seat fixed!

I didn't see any stripes on Colin's car.

And there were no "stripper" Merkurs whatsoever, although if any strippers own one, I hope they come to Carlisle next year.

Aside from the puns, I wouldn't call any Merkur sold in this country a stripper-- they were quite high-contented compared to other makes of cars, as well as to European Sierras. They were intended to be a botique brand to compete with BMW, Saab, etc.

True dat! My wife and I were tooling around in my XR today when she remarked that she was chilly, so I reached over and turned on her heated seat. By the time we arrived at our destination her bum was warm enough for her to say she wanted to start driving my car to work each day. She normally drives an 03 WRX. Not exactly a luxury car, but at $25,000 or so new, it has no heated seats and no heated mirrors. It has no features above and beyond the XR.

That 89 I posted about without heated seats was as stripped as an XR got in 89.

No extra options including sunroof (it does not have one).

Total vehicle price was $19,759.00. So even a bare bones XR was still pretty pricey in 1989.

As far as I know the only options at that time were leather, heated seats, sunroof and cruise control.

If anyone else has an 89 sticker I would be curious as to what those options cost.
